Position Summary
The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education and exhibition.

The Science Conservation department is seeking a part-time Conservation Intern to provide support for the IMLS-funded project Conserving, Rehousing and Reunifying the Invaluable Elephant and Bovid Specimens at the American Museum of Natural History. The project will make necessary upgrades to the care and management of the Museum's collection of nearly 100 African and Asian elephant skulls and significantly enhance its accessibility and opportunities for research use. Collected during some of the most famous field expeditions of the early 20th century, the collection has enormous historical and scientific importance to Museum audiences and is among the largest in the country (in both number and size).

The position will last for an appointment term of 18 months. The Intern will work under the Project Director, within the Science Conservation department, and as part of the larger project team. They will carry out efforts focused on stabilization, rehousing, cleaning and documentation of elephant crania.

Ideal candidates will possess the capacity for meticulous care in the handling of collections materials, strong written/verbal communication skills and organizational/problem-solving competencies.

Job duties include:

  • Work with the project team to complete basic examination, as well as conservation treatment and documentation activities including cleaning, rehousing and archiving of conservation records.
  • Support various other project activities, including the research and testing of materials and methods in support of treatment, stabilization and rehousing of specimens, preparation and procurement of materials and tools used in conservation treatment and related administrative tasks.
  • Contribute to the development and dissemination of content communicating project findings to collection care audiences outside the Museum via the generation of webpage updates, blog posts, conference presentations, posters, etc.


The expected salary for the Conservation Intern is $25/hour. This position is overtime-eligible.

Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience.
Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in fine arts, the humanities or the sciences.
  • One year of related museum work experience.
  • Seeking to enter or advance in the field of conservation through graduate study or other professional development.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in fine art/craft, art history, museum studies, engineering/material science, chemistry, conservation, heritage preservation or architecture.
  • Familiarity with conservation issues and procedures related to handling, examination, treatment and/or documentation of museum collection items similar to those within the scope of this project.
  • Digital photography skills.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for prolonged periods.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Must be able to move about the Museum campus.
  • Positioning/change of positioning: Must be able to frequently position oneself/body to accomplish job duties.

    • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling.
