Department Overview

The MIND Institute is an interdisciplinary, collaborative research, clinical, and educational center committed to deepening our scientific understanding of the challenges associated with autism and other neurodevelopmental conditions.

The Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (CEDD) at the MIND Institute is one of 67 federally designated university centers (UCEDDs) across the country. The Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (CEDD) within the MIND Institute, collaborates with individuals with Developmental Disabilities (DD) and their families to improve quality of life and inclusion through advocacy, community partnerships, interdisciplinary training, and translation of research into culturally and linguistically relevant research and community applications. CEDD brings added resources to expand the activities and impact of the MIND Institute, serving as a resource in the areas of education, research and service, and providing a link between the university and the community to improve the quality of life for individuals with developmental disabilities. The CEDD works closely with our Leadership Education in Developmental Disabilities (LEND) program to provide graduate and post-graduate level, interdisciplinary leadership and service training program federally funded through HRSA's Maternal Child Health Bureau. The purpose of the LEND program is to provide interdisciplinary and leadership training to clinicians, families, self-advocates, and community leaders involved with developmental disabilities.

In compliance with our UCEDD funder's requirements, we make the personal perspective of disability and cultural/linguistic diversity prominent in our planning, implementation, evaluation and dissemination activities. As an organization that represents the disability perspective, we strive to serve as a model program on disability inclusion and cultural diversity. Most of our staff are people with disabilities or family members of people with disabilities, and they are representative of the cultural and linguistic diversity of California. We often hire new staff into part-time positions, and as new funding becomes available, they may be invited to increase their effort to participate in additional projects.
