The Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at USC is seeking a qualified Part-Time Lecturer to join the Master of Science in Digital Social Media (DSM) program. We are looking for a dynamic educator to teach two elective courses in Spring 2025: One focusing on Digital Media Innovation and another on User Interface Design.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teach two elective courses during Spring 2025:
    DSM 599, Digital Media Innovation and DSM 599, User Interface Design.
  • Integrate theoretical concepts with practical applications to prepare students for careers in digital media industries.
  • Create an engaging and supportive learning environment that encourages critical thinking and creativity.
  • Engage with diverse student populations and contribute to a collaborative and inclusive academic environment.

DSM 599: Digital Media Innovation

This graduate-level course critically evaluates the forefront of digital media, emphasizing generative AI, blockchain applications, XR (augmented and virtual reality), the metaverse, and other innovations, and their transformative impact - or failure. Students will delve into emerging technologies and the business models behind them, the processes of innovative content creation, and the multifaceted impact of strategic implementation. Through a blend of theoretical insights, practical applications, and real-world case studies, the course fosters a deep understanding of digital-media developments and their implications for communication professionals. Topics includeAI-powered content creation, digital ethics, and applying data-driven insights for effective media strategies.

DSM 599: User Interface Design

The field of user interface (UI) design deals with the theory and research of human-computer interaction, or HCI, which is the relationships between humans and technology, and how humans interact with products and services. This course explores the human side of interfaces through an exploration of HCI, user research, and the design/evaluation of experiences. We will examine user experience research, discuss how engaging content is developed, and evaluate the future of interfaces and human-centered design. Students will cover a broad overview of these and other topics critical to a holistic understanding of interfaces beyond software engineering and information architecture. Students will learn about the design of wireframes, prototyping and usability evaluations, as well as the design of effective user interfaces.

Position Summary:

We invite applications for an Part-Time Lecturer position in the Master of Science in Digital Social Media program. The successful candidate will have the expertise to teach elective courses that prepare students for the evolving digital media landscape, specifically in the following areas:

  • Digital Media Innovation
  • User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI) Design
  • Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
  • Digital Media Ventures
  • Analytics & Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Qualifications:

  • Education:A graduate degree in communication, business, education, or a related discipline is preferred but not required. Demonstrated expertise in digital media is essential.
  • Teaching Experience:Experience teaching at the undergraduate, graduate, or professional level, with strong student evaluations. Must have experience engaging diverse student populations and fostering an inclusive academic environment.
  • Professional Experience:At least 10 years of recent experience as an executive, entrepreneur, or consultant in digital media or a related field. Strong professional relationships with industry partners to support DSM students and alumni in career advancement are highly desirable.
  • Skills:Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with students, colleagues, and industry partners.

Compensation:

The per unit pay range for this position is $1,875 - $2,048. This is a part-time position. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, federal, state and local laws, contractual stipulations, as well as external market and organizational considerations.

USC reserves the "Part-Time" appointment for faculty teaching less than full-time at USC, who are employed less than full-time in a primary profession or career elsewhere. Part-Time faculty typically teach only two courses per semester, if approved by the dean.
