Position description

The Department of History in the School of Arts & Humanities at UC San Diego invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor in 19th/20th Century Modern European History (excluding Central European, including Russian-Soviet History). Research focus should be located in one or more geographical locations and ideally should connect Europe with other parts of the world by drawing on transnational, comparative, or global frameworks. The Department is especially interested in a thematic emphasis on the history of colonialism and imperialism, on the transnational history of knowledge and science, or on the history of minorities, migration/displacement and cross-cultural interactions.

The anticipated start date for this position is July 1, 2025. Duties include active research, graduate supervision, classroom teaching at all levels, and department and university service. We seek candidates with a demonstrated commitment and ability to serve the needs of traditionally underrepresented communities in higher education. Teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate and graduate courses in Modern European History.


Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Must be ABD in History or related discipline.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

Must possess a PhD in History or related discipline by the time of appointment.

Preferred qualifications

Scholars whose research focuses on Modern European History in a transnational, comparative, or global context are particularly encouraged to apply.
