2025 Summer Intern - Early Clinical Development Informatics - Digital Transformation Office

Department Summary

Advanced machine learning technologies are increasingly being used to enhance the drug development process. These innovations may bring increased efficiency to clinical trials, but succeeding in this integration requires careful analysis, bold experimentation, and rigorous software development.

In this role you will join the gRED Digital Transformation Office's software group to develop software to streamline drug development. You will meet with Clinical Science, Operations, and Informatics stakeholders to understand the wants and needs for high quality datasets and software applications. You will develop these applications which may involve integrating LLM technology.

You will gain hands-on experience in the day-to-day activities within ECD (Early Clinical Development), while also obtaining a high-level understanding of the execution of clinical trials needed to bring drugs to patients. You will also have an opportunity to get exposure to a range of cross-functional disciplines and across multiple therapeutic areas including oncology, immunology, neuroscience, metabolism, infectious disease, and others.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.

The Opportunity

  • Develop or contribute to high impact Saas tools that automate and optimize critical clinical trial processes and datasets.

  • Work seamlessly with a fast-moving, innovative software team.

  • Interview and interact with internal and external key stakeholders, synthesizing themes, pain points and opportunities.

  • Present your internship project and learnings in one of our internal forums.

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in May/June 2025.

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

  • Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

  • Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.

Who You Are (Required)

Required Education:

You meet one of the following criteria:

  • Must be pursuing a Bachelor's Degree (enrolled student)

  • Must have attained a Bachelor's Degree (not currently enrolled in a graduate program)

  • Must be pursuing a Master's Degree (enrolled student)

  • Must have attained a Master's Degree

  • Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student)

Required majors: Computer science, data science, computer engineering, or other related STEM field.

Required skills:

  • Experience in using Python for data pipelines

  • Experience in JavaScript for web development

  • Excellent problem-solving abilities -- able to articulate a problem statement when processes may be complex and/or ambiguous

  • The ability to work independently and proactively with minimal guidance

Other Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

  • Complements our culture and the standards that guide our daily behavior & decisions: Integrity, Courage, and Passion.

  • Experience with Vue.js, FastAPI, Docker, and PostgreSQL

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office SDK/Javascript API

  • Experience with LLMs

  • Familiarity with Design Thinking, Agile, or Lean methodologies

  • Experience in drug development and/or clinical research

  • Experience in the general healthcare sector -- possibly in a hospital, clinic, insurance or health-tech startup

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco is $45-$50 per hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
