Position Summary
The University of St. Francis ( USF), a Catholic, Franciscan institution in Joliet, Illinois, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor of Computer Science, or a full-time Teaching Instructor of Computer Science to begin in August 2025, pending budgetary approval. Founded in 1920, USF is an award-winning, high-quality, Catholic, Franciscan university. The university is in a residential neighborhood 35 miles southwest of Chicago. The surrounding Chicagoland area offers robust park and recreation resources, major league sports, cultural arts, museums, festivals, shopping, restaurants, and two major airports.
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science houses the Computer Science programs, which include five undergraduate programs (Computer Science, Information Technology, Web Development, Mathematics & Computer Science, and a program specifically designed for transfer students, IT & Network Specialist) and one graduate certificate program (Cybersecurity). The department consists of four full-time faculty who engage with students both in the classroom environment and in extracurricular activities by facilitating student clubs, internships, student research opportunities, and more.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate courses in Computer Science and Information Technology for majors and non-majors; this could include courses in computer languages, operating systems, database management, networking, etc.
  • Engage in course development and program design to incorporate innovative directions in computer science and/or to develop collaborative interdisciplinary curricula.
  • Advise IT majors, Math & CS majors, Web Development majors, Cybersecurity certificate students, students enrolled in the cybersecurity and crime minor and provide service to the department, college, and university.
  • Participate in professional development activities to remain current in the field.
  • Oversee maintenance of the computer lab, designated for CS/IT students.
  • Participate in scholarly activities such as scholarly writing, conference presentations, student and faculty research projects, and grant proposals.

Minimum Requirements

  • M.S. in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related fields, earned by August 2025 (minimum required for Teaching Instructor)
  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related fields, earned by August 2025 (minimum required for tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor)
  • Relevant IT industry experience
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position
  • Willingness to support the Catholic and Franciscan values of the university

Preferred Requirements

  • University or college teaching experience
  • Research experience in a field related to computer science (for those seeking tenure track Assistant/Associate Professor)

Hours/Shift/Work Schedule
This is a full-time position with a 24 credit hour (for tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor) or 24-30 credit hour (for Teaching Instructor) teaching load per academic year. Rank will depend on the qualifications of the candidate. Maintenance of the Computer Science lab may count as 3 credit hours towards the teaching load, per semester.

Physical Requirements of Position
Work is performed in an office setting with minimal exposure to health or safety hazards. Substantial time is spent working on a computer. This is sedentary work which requires the following physical activities: sitting, walking, bending, stooping, finger dexterity, repetitive motions, talking, hearing and visual acuity.
