As a Bioinformatics Engineer in the Content Development team, you will play a critical role in maintaining and extending QIAGEN's biomedical knowledge base by integrating new knowledge from public data sources. You will also contribute to data quality efforts by defining and implementing test plans, helping to ensure the accuracy and completeness of content delivered to our downstream application teams. Responsibilities - Develop and maintain bioinformatics software tools and pipelines to ingest, transform, and export vast amounts of biomedical data. - Maintain and extend a complex biomedical ontology spanning the entire range of biological entities and processes relevant to life science R&D and clinical genomics. - Collaborate with product management and application software developers to investigate new content sources and define requirements for content development projects. - Contribute to data quality efforts by defining and implementing test plans, helping to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the biomedical knowledge base. Position Requirements - Undergraduate degree in computer science, molecular biology, bioengineering, or a related M.S. or Ph.D. degree preferred. - 5+ years of industry experience in bioinformatics, including experience writing production-quality code for bioinformatics tools and pipelines. - Strong software development fundamentals, with experience in multiple general-purpose programming languages, including Python, and comfort operating in a Linux environment. Competence with software engineering best practices such as version control (git), code review, unit and integration testing, documentation, and collaborative development. - Experience with multiple data modeling paradigms, including relational databases (SQL) and non-relational approaches such as graph databases (e.g., AWS Neptune, Neo4j). - Hands-on experience with biomedical ontologies and related technologies such as RDF and OWL. - Familiarity with common biological databases such as NCBI, UniProt, Ensembl. Personal Requirements - Location: Redwood City, California (will need to come onsite). The estimated base salary range for this position is $100,000 - $150,000. Compensation will be based on the candidate's experience, skills, geographic location, and other job-related factors.
