Assistant/Associate Professor Position in PORTUGUESE

The Department of Portuguese at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level beginning in September 2025. The Department is particularly interested in candidates with a teaching and research focus in comparative Luso-Afro-Brazilian studies, including Portuguese, Brazilian, Lusophone African, and/or Portuguese American literatures and cultures. The Department collaborates closely with the Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture and the Ferreira-Mendes Portuguese American Archives at UMass Dartmouth and values engagement with diasporic communities of Portuguese, Brazilian and Cabo Verdean origin in our region.

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth is in the beautiful ocean side community of Dartmouth, about an hour south of Boston, half-hour east of Providence, and half-hour west of Cape Cod. Duties:

The successful candidate will have an active research agenda and will have produced a body of scholarship that is recognized for contributing to the growth of knowledge in their area of specialization. That candidate will implement inclusive, evidence-based teaching and learning approaches to ensure the academic success of a diverse student population; advise undergraduate and graduate (MA & PhD) students; contribute to university and professional service; foster interdisciplinary collaborations; and actively engage in college and university diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. All faculty members are evaluated annually, as well as for contract renewal and for promotion and tenure, in four categories: 1) teaching and advising, 2) scholarship and professional activities, 3) university service, and/or 4) public service. Evaluation is mandatory in the categories of teaching and advising, and of scholarship and professional activities.

Minimum Qualifications:



  • Doctoral degree in Portuguese or a closely related field at the time of appointment
  • Ability to teach undergraduate courses in the Portuguese language, as well as graduate and undergraduate classes in the literatures and cultures of the Portuguese-speaking world
  • A strong commitment to teaching excellence and scholarly research


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Strong candidates will have published peer-reviewed research in the field of Luso-Afro-Brazilian literary and cultural studies
  • Significant teaching experience in higher education
  • Administrative experience in academic settings
  • Leadership roles in scholarly, cultural, or interdisciplinary centers
  • Demonstrated commitment to efforts to increase the recruitment and retention of women and members of historically minoritized groups are encouraged
