Job Summary:

The Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is seeking applicants at the ranks of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor to develop a vibrant experimental or computational research program in high-speed, compressible, single- or multi-phase fluid dynamics with applications in aerospace, energy, or related fields.

The ideal candidate will be interested in collaborative research and be an integral contributor to the Engineering Mechanics/Aerospace (EMA) undergraduate and graduate programs, which are housed in the ME Department. In view of the expanding aerospace engineering industry and employment opportunities, the ME Department seeks to strengthen and grow its Aerospace Engineering teaching and research profile. Successful candidates will have demonstrated an ability and commitment to effectively mentor at-risk, first-generation, or underrepresented students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Responsibilities:

Teaching and developing inclusive undergraduate and graduate courses for a diverse student body in the ME and EMA degree programs, mentoring graduate students and supervising their research; developing and directing a successful, extramurally funded research program; participating in departmental and university faculty governance; and contributing to professional and public service.

Education:

Required
PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Aerospace Engineering or closely related field.


Qualifications:

Candidates will have a commitment to inclusive excellence in teaching, and evidence of the ability and commitment to mentor first-generation and/or underrepresented undergraduate and graduate students. Additionally, candidates will have a demonstrated record of academic achievement such as peer-reviewed publications and grant awards appropriate for their career level, exceptional potential in establishing a world-class research program and a demonstrated commitment to high-quality and inclusive undergraduate and graduate instruction.

Associate and Full professor candidates must possess experience and scholarly credentials that meet the tenure standards of the UW-Madison Divisional Committee and of the College of Engineering.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is rapidly expanding, with growing student enrollment and a dynamic wave of faculty hires, making it one of the university's most vibrant and fast-evolving departments. Current research areas in the ME Department include energy systems and storage, electrochemical systems, and sustainability; robotics, sensing and autonomous systems; computer-aided engineering, data-driven approaches, AI/ML and design; engineering mechanics and aerospace engineering; cell mechanics, biomechanics and biorobotics; and advanced materials design and manufacturing. New research directions will continue to be launched and nurtured to facilitate creative solutions to transformative technical challenges.
