Job Description
General Description: Terracon is seeking entry laborers to join our drilling crews. This a great opportunity to learn a skilled trade as an assistant to the Drill Foreman on a team performing geotechnical drilling operations for the collection of soil samples. The primary role includes filling out boring logs to record drilling information with soil sample identification and labeling in real-time fashion on project sites. (On the job training and mentorship will be provided.)
Periodic safety training and maintenance tasks will also be included.
Essential Functions and Duties:
  • An ability to follow multiple verbal and written directives simultaneously while actively functioning in a dynamic environment.
  • You will be trained in the duties that pertain to performing test borings with an emphasis on proper field log documentation and sample preservation. Clear hand writing, attention to detail, and following instructions in a fast-paced environment are necessary skills.
  • Be ready to drive medium to heavy duty pickup trucks (and occasional trailers) to various job sites. Will need to obtain and keep in good standing a Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Card (physical required) upon employment.
  • Keep, wear, and maintain at all times required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Including but not limited to; high visibility shirts, jackets or vests, above-the-ankle lace-up steel toed boots, gloves, safety glasses, hard hat, hearing protection. Terracon will provide all this for you.
  • Loads appropriate drilling, sampling and well installation tools and supplies onto trucks or drill rigs as directed by the drill foreman.
  • Obtain additional OSHA 40hour Hazwoper, 1st Aid, and CPR certificates as needed.
  • A preferred candidate would have or have a willingness to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and performs required truck, trailer & equipment inspections and maintain a DOT Digital Log for hours of operation.
  • Perform miscellaneous maintenance duties in field or shop such as sweep & clean shop, putting away supply orders, cleaning and/or maintenance support trucks, trailers, and drilling equipment & tooling.
Physical Requirements: This position is physically active. The physical demands described here are representative to these that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • Average workdays are Monday-Friday and range from 8-10 hours.
  • Employee must regularly lift and/or move small containers and tools.
  • Employee must regularly twist, screw and lift equipment and supplies. Employee must regularly shovel, sweep and scrape various types of soils, concrete and debris.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this job, be ready for outside weather conditions. We operate year-round in the Midwest, focused in Iowa.
  • Overnight travel will be required with this position; an estimated average would be 20% to 50% of the time. Usually, travel is between one to three nights but may be up to a few weeks on rare, large projects.
