General Responsibilities
The learning designer (LD) works with faculty to develop and redevelop high-quality courses. The Learning Designer coaches faculty on research-based pedagogical best practices and the use and adoption of instructional technology tools. The learning designer is responsible for designing and developing content and learning experiences for various audiences and delivery methods. In collaboration with division leadership, the LD supports the coordination for the implementation, delivery, and assessment of academic programs and institutional initiatives. A successful candidate must be able to manage multiple projects on various timelines from analysis, to design, to development, to implementation. The incumbent will use outcomes to evaluate academic courses, programs, and institutional initiatives. The ability to build relationships and collaborate with partners across campus is crucial to this role.
Work Performed
Applies front-end analyses including needs assessment, task analysis, content analysis, learner characteristic assessment, environmental review, and instructional analysis; applies and modifies various instructional design models and instructional systems components for institutional initiatives

Formulate and implement goals, objectives, and guidelines for courses, programs, and instructional technology within the framework of the college's mission, vision, and goals in consultation with appropriate staff and stakeholders. Provide support in the development, implementation, and assessment of academic programs.

Design and develop training materials for institutional initiatives. Build exemplary models, structures, and professional development for institutional initiatives

Research, analyze, design, develop, deliver, and evaluate faculty development sessions to support high-quality, current best practices in teaching and learning. Design and develop institutional workshops, programs, seminars, faculty learning communities, and conferences designed to improve teaching and learning. Evaluate the impact of faculty professional development on student performance measures

Develop course design templates, checklists, guidelines, and best practices for learning in all modalities

Work closely with faculty, department chairs, coordinators, and deans to develop and redevelop courses for continual improvement, ensuring that they reflect research-based best practices in teaching and learning. Coach and manage faculty through the design and development of faculty grant projects, long-term course development, redevelopment, and institutional initiatives

Coach faculty on the application of adult learning principles to delivery methods, training program design, development, and evaluation

Manage learning design projects, monitor project progress, set deadlines, solve issues that arise, ensure stakeholder satisfaction, and evaluate project performance. Supervise graduate-level interns, part-time employees, and work-study students.

Provide high-level faculty and staff support for the college's LMS (Learning Management System) to enhance instruction and student success. Research, evaluate, select, and assess new and existing instructional technology tools, strategies, and resources for the Teaching and Learning Division and faculty

Provide support in deployment, support, communication, and training of course evaluation tool

Assist faculty, chairs, and coordinators in the assessment of student learning outcomes by defining measurable outcomes and mapping those learning outcomes in the Learning Management System to efficiently collect data for course, program, or general education assessment. Compile data for the analysis of academic program success and student needs assessment

Consults with Teaching and Learning staff, faculty, intuitional divisions, and cross-functional areas making recommendations to assist in developing procedures for effective teaching and learning or related processes

Monitor developments in the field of instructional design and technology to remain current on pedagogical developments and innovative and effective strategies and practices

Remain current on the online learning regulatory and compliance agency requirements, including ADA compliance, FERPA, and other applicable laws, rules, and regulations related to learning. Develop and implement plans that address accessibility in online instruction. This includes compliance with federal regulations, support and training for faculty in designing accessible course materials, problem-solving to address accommodation requests from students or faculty and adaptation of course materials

  • A minimum of a master's degree or its equivalent in one of the following: Instructional Systems, Instructional Design, Online Education, or related fields
  • One year of experience in the field (higher education preferred)
  • One year of online teaching experience within the last five years (preferred)
  • Excellent analytical and evaluation skills
  • Proficient knowledge of instructional design theories and online pedagogies
  • Deep instructional design knowledge and application with the ability to convert this into engaging learning experiences in the online environment
  • Knowledgeable about quality assurance frameworks in online learning (Quality Matters preferred)
  • Working knowledge of a Learning Management System (Canvas preferred)
  • Expertise with instructional technology/content authoring software such as Articulate, Storyline, Pressbooks, WordPress, etc
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications and Adobe eLearning Suite
  • Ability to apply and instruct in the principles and practicalities of accessibility and UDL practices
  • Highly organized with excellent attention to detail and the ability to multi-task under strict deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Regular attendance is a requirement for this job
  • Performs all duties while considering the impact of any actions on the college's sustainability initiatives in the areas of environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and economic prosperity
  • Knowledge and understanding of diversity, equity, inclusion issues, and best practices in higher education

As a participating member of the Maryland Retirement and Pension System, HCC offers two retirement options: The Pension, which requires a 7% employee contribution and The ORP, a 403(b) with a 7.25% employer contribution only. Employees in positions that do not require a bachelor's degree must participate in The Pension. Employees that possess a bachelor's degree and hold professional positions that require a bachelor's degree may choose to participate in either The Pension or The ORP.
