Position Summary
Nava's Principal Software Engineer (FHIR) is an expert in HL7 FHIR and related standards and serves as a vital bridge between Nava, technical experts, external developers, and clients. As an architect, strategist, consultant, and translator, your mission will be to drive the overall strategy and architecture for FHIR-based software services within major federal agencies. The incumbent is a dynamic, technically-oriented individual who possesses an innate ability to delve deep into technology, find ways to improve it, and help the end user community understand and adopt our clients' technologies. The Principal Engineer is someone adept at speaking with customers, gathering their feedback, and helping translate that feedback into action with the project team. Your role will encompass various collaborative efforts with clients to shape the product roadmap, providing subject matter expertise when investigating customer issues, training engineers, and driving technical overall direction within the organization.

What you'll do
  • Working with software engineers in understanding FHIR objects and relationships, the standards landscape, and implementation considerations related to claims data
  • Crafting long-term strategic roadmaps related to FHIR conformance and overall standards development
  • Active work within the HL7 and related standards bodies
  • Developing a deep understanding of the developer user space and their needs now and in the future
  • Prototyping new features, tools, etc.
  • Working closely with product, design, and engineering teams to share developer user needs now and in the future. This should deeply inform project direction
  • Reviewing, improving, and writing user documentation, product and technical plans, and software with an eye toward user needs now and in the future
  • Taking on software engineering tasks on an as-needed basis, including building new features needed by users or debugging user issues.
Required skills
  • Current and/or prior experience developing API endpoints with Kotlin, Java, Python, Ruby, etc
  • At least 6 years of experience working in an agile, multidisciplinary team environment, preferably designing and building medium to large-scale web applications on Cloud Platforms
  • Strong experience in the healthcare industry - you live and breathe HL7/FHIR!
  • Experience utilizing Smart on FHIR standards to build healthcare applications
  • Tenacity to dive into problems and iterate in working code
  • Equal parts systems thinker, software engineer and overall evangelist
  • Highly resourceful, reliable, and detail-oriented
  • Ability to think strategically around trade-offs and short term vs. long term benefits
  • An adaptive, empathetic, collaborative and positive mindset
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, technical and otherwise.

Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
Must meet any other requirements for government contracts for which candidates are hired.
Work authorization that doesn't require visa sponsorship, now or in the future.
May be subject to a government background check or security clearance, depending on the contract.
