General Purpose of Job: Performs a variety of clerical tasks in support of assigned nursing unit. Duties include, but are not limited to, preparing and maintaining patient charts, transcribing physician's orders, scheduling patient appointments, answering phones, greeting visitors to the unit, responding to patient call lights, updating patient information, and assisting unit staff as needed. Essential Duties: This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.
- Prepares and maintains charts for patients admitted to the unit, reviews charts to assure completeness and accuracy, and conducts necessary follow-up.
- Telephones other Hospital departments to schedule tests, x-rays, and other appointments in accordance with physician's orders.
- Functions as receptionist for assigned nursing unit greeting visitors, answering telephones, providing information and assistance, and/or directing callers/visitors to the appropriate place/person.
- Answers patient call lights and relays information obtained to the appropriate staff in a timely manner.
- Prepares charts for patients being transferred to another hospital.
- Breaks down discharged patient charts and forwards them to Medical Records.
- Maintains the unit's patient chart rack and orders patient chart supplies as needed.
- Provides daily worksheets on each patient.
- Assists unit staff with various clerical tasks as needed.
- Supports and serves as a role model for our mission, vision, values and customer service initiatives. Adheres to the organization's policies and procedures, and compliance guidelines.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

* General knowledge of medical terminology - preferred * Typing and computer skills necessary to accurately enter information into computer system * Knowledge of accrediting and regulatory standards and hospital policies related to the provision of care including HIPAA confidentiality and TJC mandates * Interpersonal skills necessary to provide courteous and accurate information, on the phone and in person, to all levels of staff, patients, families and visitors * Written skills necessary to transcribe physician orders and maintain accurate patient records * Mental ability to work on tasks requiring accuracy and attention to detail, adapt and respond to multiple priorities and demands, and to interact with patients who may at times be ill, confused, hostile and/or emotionally upset * Physical ability to provide assistance to patients and lift/move items weighing up to 25 pounds * Demonstrates ability to use a keyboard as may be required to perform the essential duties of the job |
