Primary Purpose of Department |
The Niblock Student Center is a comprehensive student services office that provides advising, coaching, programming, and events to facilitate academic planning, career development, and professional growth for business students. The professional development (PD) team is one of two teams housed within the Center. The PD team facilitates employer connections and provides intentional experiential learning opportunities in order for students to develop in-demand professional skills that fit their diverse aspirations. Primary Purpose of Position |
The Associate Director of Professional Development will advance the Niblock Student Center mission through the leadership of professional staff who spearhead career and professional development programming in an effort to help undergraduate students best plan and prepare for a full-time career post-graduation and connect them with employment resources. |
Summary of Position Responsibilities |
The Associate Director of Professional Development will:
- Hire, train, and supervise the unit's professional staff and any student workers
- Create and execute quality career development programming that results in the acquisition of professional competencies and engages students in the business profession, equip students to translate classroom knowledge into job-ready skills and behaviors that are desired by employers, and promote experiential education, including internship for academic credit and study abroad.
- Provide classroom instruction and workshop presentations, administer and interpret career assessments, and perform other outreach related to the Center's mission.
- Manage productive relationships with employers, alumni, and the campus community for the purpose of strengthening internship opportunities and pipelines for entry-level work, as well as monitor hiring trends and employer needs.
- Assist in assessing career education activities, report learning outcomes, and contribute to the timely and accurate collection of employment data.
- Actively participate in unit activities and events and collaborate with Center staff to achieve goals supporting the Center's mission.
- Manage special program recruitment, selection, programming, and assessment.
- Provide classroom instruction consistent with special program guidelines where applicable.

Minimum Education/Experience |
- A Master's degree in career counseling, student development, higher education, or related field is required.
- One year experience working in an academic institution of higher education.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience |
Three to five years' experience working in an academic institution of higher education is preferred. One to three years of professional staff supervision is highly desirable. Experience with career development programming, employer relations, college internships, job placement, and career readiness for undergraduate students is preferred. Direct knowledge of the business industry and understanding of desired competencies for business occupations is strongly preferred.
Candidates should have experience with career development programming, employer relations, college internships and job placement, and career readiness. Certification in Strong Interest Inventory, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, or StrengthsQuest preferred.
The ideal candidate will possess polished interpersonal communication skills, training and counseling skills, and have experience in career counseling in a higher education setting. The candidate should demonstrate a professional demeanor that establishes credibility quickly, inspires confidence and builds positive relationships. Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to demonstrate tact, diplomacy and maintain a high level of confidentiality is required. Outstanding presentation skills enabling effective, influential communication with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff, alumni and business community is vital to this position. Attention to detail, task orientation and ability to work collaboratively as well as independently to achieve institutional goals and objectives is necessary for success. Proficiency with various computer applications, Microsoft Office, and web technology are essential skills. |
