Note: This position is in Farmington, CT, and will be a hybrid work environment.

Role Overview

As an Intern in Alternatives Assets at SIM (Symetra Investment Management), you will embark on a valuable learning experience, contributing to the development/improvement of management reporting, process improvements, and monitoring of alternative assets for SIM's clients, and in particular, its affiliated life insurance clients. This internship provides a unique opportunity for students pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in finance to apply their academic knowledge to real-world challenges.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Assist with the refinement and development of management reporting, creation/implementation of process improvements, and other client-specific considerations.


  • Assist with manager due diligence, coordinating with other areas of SIM as appropriate.


  • Develop and learn to build relationships with sourcing partners.


  • Collaborate with legal and compliance teams on documentation.


  • Keep apprised of emerging industry trends and themes in alternative asset management and perform ad-hoc research projects as needed.


  • Conduct ongoing reporting and surveillance of investments and external managers. Maintain and improve repeatable processes for quantifying and reporting results as needed.


  • Interact with other members of the Symetra investment department including, legal, operations, accounting, reporting and compliance.



Your education, experience, and skills



  • Education: Currently pursuing a bachelor's (rising senior) or master's degree in finance, economics, accounting, mathematics or relevant field is required.


  • Courses/Knowledge: Portfolio Management and Investments; strong understanding of investment concepts


  • Analytical Skills: Ability to provide quantitative/analytical and qualitative evidence to support an investment thesis;and experience developing and implementing value added investment recommendations


  • Systems: Microsoft Excel


  • Effective Communication:Ability to work effectively in a small, collaborative team, while also communicating and interacting with a larger group of investment professionals


  • Learning Aptitude: High level of initiative coupled with intellectual curiosity
