Job Summary

Under the supervision of a Clinical Research Supervisor or Principal Investigator (PI), the incumbent will perform entry-level duties related to the support and coordination of clinical studies, with a focus on managing responses to study advertisements and recruiting for studies in the African American community in the San Francisco Bay Area. The incumbent will receive training and development to prepare and advance for journey-level work at the next level within the series.

May be responsible for the coordination of one or more single or multi-site, active clinical trials; help prepare protocols for study initiation; help design flow sheets, data forms and source documents; gather and interpret medical and laboratory data regarding clinical trial subjects; may apply understanding of inclusion/exclusion eligibility criteria for protocols; help recruit, enroll, register, schedule and retain study subjects; record protocol specific treatments and assure collection of samples; assist research personnel to keep patients on study schedules; collect, enter and clean data into study databases, maintaining data quality; assist with data analysis; assist with preparation of reports and tables; attend team meetings; help organize community meetings and community engagement; and perform other duties as assigned.

This is a limited role that will end 1 year from the start date.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $28.48 - $45.80 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Medicine, with annual revenues of $417 million, is the largest department in the UCSF School of Medicine. The mission of the Department is research (basic and clinical), teaching, patient care, and public service. The Department has a decentralized organizational structure across four sites (Parnassus, ZSFG, SFVAHCS, and Mt. Zion) and 41 divisions housing 613 faculty, 160 non-faculty academics, 382 residents/fellows, 92 post-docs, and 804 staff. Authority and accountability for the Department rest with the Department Chair who heads the Parnassus and Mt. Zion sites and also directs the Vice Chairs at the ZSFG and SFVAHCS sites. Schick Lab studies the health effects of air pollution, with a focus on secondhand tobacco and cannabis smoke. We go out to public places where people are using cannabis and collect data and samples of the air pollutants (field research). We also recruit healthy nonsmokers, expose them to air pollution and assess the health effects (clinical research).

Required Qualifications


  • HS graduation and sufficient experience and demonstrated skills to successfully perform the assigned duties and responsibilities; and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications and presentation skills; excellent organizational skills; and excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively in a diverse team.
  • Ability to establish cooperative working relationships with study participants, study staff and community members.
  • Attention to details
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Windows.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
