The Director of Depot Facilities is responsible for planning, building, relocating, expanding and maintaining depot facilities. This role requires experience in industrial space management, project management capabilities, and facility/warehouse design and management. The Director ensures safe, efficient, and well-organized depot spaces (office, depot, warehouse), with a focus on solving operational issues related to depot space, continuous improvement, and capital budget management. Working closely with internal teams and external partners/vendors, this will manage facility standards and guide depot leaders in maintaining effective operations. Strong leadership, communication, and change management skills are essential to support the company's growth and ensure smooth transitions during relocations and expansions. Compensation: $140,000 - 180,000; based on proven skills and experience and geographical locations and market conditions. Location: Ideally, this position is based out of the Minneapolis/St. Paul Metro area with 50-65% travel across the country to our 41 depot locations. Key Responsibilities:
- Facility Planning, Real Estate & Project Management:
- Lead the planning, design, and construction of new depot facilities, as well as depot relocations and expansions.
- Collaborate with real estate developers, internal stakeholders, and vendors to manage site selection, lease negotiations, and property management.
- Manage project timelines, budgets, and resources to ensure seamless, on-time delivery.
- Develop layouts that promote safety, efficiency, and optimal space utilization, incorporating 5S management principles.
- Safety, Efficiency, and Continuous Improvement:
- Identify opportunities to improve safety, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations and internal policies.
- Implement lean processes to increase efficiency and eliminate waste, with a focus on operational standardization.
- Address root cause issues in existing facilities and drive continuous improvement across depot operations.
- Capital Budget Management:
- Lead the capital budgeting process from development to execution, ensuring alignment with strategic and financial goals.
- Monitor project budgets, providing accurate forecasts and optimizing capital expenditures.
- Depot Operations & Material Management:
- Collaborate with depot leadership on material handling, inventory management, and space organization.
- Establish and maintain operational standards to support effective space utilization and smooth daily operations.
- Ensure compliance with hygiene audits such as HACCP and EcoSure, performing regular inspections to monitor safety and cleanliness; partnering with Internal Audit as applicable
- Communication & Change Management:
- Develop and execute communication plans to ensure alignment and transparency across stakeholders during facility projects and relocations.
- Lead change management efforts, ensuring depot leaders and teams are prepared for new layouts, processes, and workflows.
- Facilitate training and adoption of new operational standards to minimize disruption during transitions.
- Anticipate and address potential resistance to change, proactively solving issues through clear communication and engagement.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration & Vendor Partnerships:
- Partner with internal teams, including Operations, Finance, and Procurement, to align business needs with facility plans.
- Collaborate with external vendors and contractors to ensure quality and efficiency in project delivery.
- Facilitate cross-departmental collaboration to drive operational improvements and promote alignment with business goals.
- Team Leadership & Development:
- Lead, coach, and mentor a high-performing team, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
- Develop team members' skills and ensure alignment with company standards and operational objectives.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Facilities Management, Real Estate, Business, or a related field.
- 7+ years of experience managing industrial facilities, warehouse planning, real estate, or project management.
- Strong budgeting and financial management experience.
- Knowledge of safety standards, operational efficiency, and 5S management.
- Excellent communication skills with experience leading facility moves and changes.
- Ability to work across teams and manage multiple priorities.
- Willingness and ability to travel 50-65%
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with ERP systems.
- Understanding of lease negotiations and industrial property trends.
- Familiarity with lean practices and continuous improvement methods.
