Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The School of Education is an academic unit reporting to the Provost. The School is a major center of research, teaching, and public service within the State of North Carolina, the nation, and the world. Its faculty, staff, students, and alumni work to solve education's most pressing and persistent challenges on behalf of all learners. The School assists in the development of strong and effective public schools in the State of North Carolina. The School's mission consists of four pillars: (1) Empowering the leaders of tomorrow, (2) Collaborating for the greater good, (3) Providing holistic education for children, families, and communities, and (4) Driving educational innovation. In support of this mission, the School offers two undergraduate majors, professional graduate programs that train teachers, school counselors, educational entrepreneurs, and school administrators, as well as doctoral programs in leadership, educational research, and school psychology. |
Position Summary |
Reporting to the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, the Dean is the School's Chief Academic Officer and will provide academic, intellectual, and administrative leadership for the School. The Dean is responsible for advancing the academic mission and vision of the School, and for promoting the strength and vitality of the School's educational and scholarly mission. This includes the recruitment and retention of creative and distinguished faculty and the development of resources to support their teaching, research, and scholarly activities. The Dean is also responsible for leading the recruitment and retention efforts for attracting high caliber undergraduate and graduate students, providing them with superior academic and professional experience. The Dean leads all administrative efforts of the School including development of the School's budget, academic policy development, curriculum development, facilities management, etc. The Dean will enhance the financial stability and growth of the School, steward its economic resources, and implement effective development activities, while also providing leadership and guidance in fiscal and personnel matters to the School's department center program administrative managers and program staff. The Dean also promotes the School's efforts to further the University's strategic objectives, serves as a representative to external constituents, and enhances the School's engagement with local, state, national and international communities. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
An earned terminal degree, record of exceptional leadership success, demonstrated excellence in teaching, and evidence of scholarly, professional, or creative achievement is required. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
A reputation for creative scholarship and a demonstrable record of fostering excellence in research, teaching, and service.
Demonstrated administrative experience, a high standard of professional integrity, and strong team-building skills. Candidates should have a demonstrated excellence in teaching and evidence of scholarly, professional, or creative achievement consistent with appointment at the rank of full professor. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Ability to think strategically and build effective institutional partnerships.
Ability to articulate effectively the School's vision and mission to the students, faculty, alumni, practitioners, external funding agencies, and other decision-making bodies. |

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities |
This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities. |
