Position Overview


Primary Purpose of Position
The primary responsibilities for this position will be expected to teach at undergraduate and graduate levels, publish, and secure external funding for research in Thermal and Fluid Mechanics, including:


  • Thermal/Fluid Mechanics Principles: Demonstrate expertise in heat transfer, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and continuum mechanics. Proficiency includes using computational and experimental methods to design and optimize systems like turbines, heat exchangers, and propulsion systems, with applications in multi-scale energy systems and aerodynamics.
  • Thermal System Design: Demonstrate proficiency in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools for designing and analyzing thermal systems. Experience with modeling, prototyping, and experimental methods is preferred.
  • Component Analysis: Apply design thinking and systems thinking to component design.
  • Material Behavior: Demonstrate the understanding of the mechanical and physical behavior of fluids at elevated temperatures.

  • CFD Expertise: Show an ability to simulate and evaluate fluid behavior and system performance under varying boundary conditions.


Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to, serving on committees, engaging in program assessment and service to the department, College, and University as needed.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
N.C. A&T is a public, land-grant, doctoral research institution and has been the largest historically Black university in the country for the past decade. The College of Engineering ( COE), with over 2,577 students, has 5 Doctoral programs, 8 Masters of Science Degree programs, and EAC ABET accredited undergraduate programs in Architectural, Bio-, Biological, Civil, Chemical, Computer, Electrical, Industrial, and Mechanical Engineering, as well as a CAC ABET-accredited program Computer Science. The College's focus is on cultivating leaders who excel in academics, innovation, and research; where the 5 research cluster areas of the COE are Autonomous Systems, Cybersecurity and Resilience, Energy and Sustainability, Healthcare Applications and Complex Systems and Networks. The Mechanical Engineering Department has 15 full-time faculty members and offers BS, MS and Ph.D. degrees. The department enrolls over 451 undergraduate students, 25 masters and 26 doctoral students. The department currently offers Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy Degrees in Mechanical Engineering. The ME undergraduate degree program has an Aerospace Option for students who are interested in aerodynamics, aero-propulsion, avionics and aero-structures. An Honors program is available for those students with a strong academic background and research interest. Our faculty members and their graduate students perform research in such areas as materials, aerospace, structural health monitoring, thermal management, micro-mechanics and micro-fluidics, CFD, control systems, design, robotics and manufacturing.
Minimum Requirements
A Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering or a closely related field, conferred by the time of appointment.
Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication skills.
A commitment to engaging and conducting research within a technically diverse, multicultural community of faculty and students.
Dedication to advancing engineering education and research in the field of Thermal/Fluid Mechanics through innovative pedagogical practices.
A proven record of research and scholarship in the area of Thermal/Fluid Mechanics.
Interest in interdisciplinary research and the ability to contribute to at least one of the College's five research focus areas:

  • Energy and Sustainability
  • Cybersecurity and Network Operations
  • Health Care Applications
  • Multiscale Materials
  • Aerospace and Transportation Applications

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  1. A minimum of five years of post-doctoral, industrial, or government experience in the field of Thermal/Fluid Mechanics.
  2. A Professional Engineer (PE) License is strongly encouraged but not required.
  3. A proven track record of effective teaching, securing external funding and scholarly publications in the area of Thermal/Fluid Mechanics.
  4. A demonstrated commitment to service at the community, university, and professional levels.
  5. A history of mentoring undergraduate and graduate students from diverse backgrounds.
  6. Clear potential to become a recognized scholar in their field of expertise.
