Laboratory Specialist III*

Position Description

  • Provide analytical services for customers from various departments throughout the company. Comply with all ASTM, USEPA, Standard Methods, and SCDHES requirements for instrumental analysis including Quality Control/Quality Assurance protocols to ensure legally defensible data for regulatory and operational requirements. Act as a resource to customers and less experienced colleagues. Works independently and receives moderate guidance from Fuels Laboratory Supervisor and Manager of Analytical Services.


  • Essential Job Tasks:
  • Analyze laboratory samples from a variety of customers in a range of matrices including but not limited to: ground water, drinking water, surface water, solid and hazardous waste, boiler water, coal, ash, coal combustible products, and transformer or used oil.
  • Performs analysis of samples from start to finish in the nutrients, microbiology, and solids laboratories. This process includes sample receiving and log in, sample and standard preparation, creating sample worksheets in instrument software, calibration of instrumentation, running instrumentation, reviewing data, exporting data to Labworks, preparing reports for final quality review.
  • Works in collaboration with other Environmental and Fuels Laboratory personnel to ensure samples are completed and reported in the required time frame.
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of instrumentation in designated area of the Environmental and Fuels Laboratories and be able to perform simple preventative and routine maintenance on these instruments.
  • Completes initial demonstration of capability for all certified methods in the Environmental Laboratory.
  • Maintains SCDHES certification by completing CDOCs, IDLs, MDLs, and annual proficiency testing. Participate in routine and certification audits as required.
  • Obtains new certifications in assigned area due to regulatory mandates.
  • Maintains chemical and laboratory supply inventory.
  • Orders sample collection supplies as necessary from contract laboratory or vendor.
  • Orders chemicals and other laboratory materials as needed from vendor.
  • Trains and assist new team members when necessary.
  • Assists Fuels and Environmental Laboratory personnel with analytics as needed.
  • Assists customers with sampling events or projects by providing sample containers, preservatives, chains of custody, and any other supplies needed for the event.

  • Laboratory Specialist I
  • Bachelor's Degree or Associate's Degree + 2 years directly related experience or High School Diploma + 4 years directly related experience.
  • Knowledge of laboratory quality control/quality assurance requirements preferred.


  • Compensation Information:
    $53,400 - $66,730 (min. - mid.)

    Laboratory Specialist II
  • Bachelor's Degree + 2 years directly related experience or Associate's Degree + 4 years directly related experience or High School Diploma + 6 years directly related experience.
  • Must have working knowledge of precision analytical laboratory protocols.
  • Experience required with Ion Chromatography and Continuous Flow Colorimetric Analyzer.


  • Compensation Information:
    $66,390 - $82,980 (min. - mid.)

    Laboratory Specialist III
  • Bachelor's Degree + 4 years directly related experience or Associate's Degree + 6 years directly related experience or High School Diploma + 10 years directly related experience.
  • Must be able to solve complex problems.
  • Experience required with Ion Chromatography and Continuous Flow Colorimetric Analyzer.


  • Compensation Information:
    $82,520 - $103,140 (min. - mid.)
