Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The Finance and Operations Information Technology Department provides innovative, and responsive technology services to the University's business units in support of the University's mission of teaching, research, and public service. The department strives to provide technology to improve business processes and communication, reduce costs, and increase customer satisfaction. |
Position Summary |
Hybrid: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
The Technology Support Specialist provides routine and non-routine technical support to end users and business units of the Division of Finance and Operations including support of hardware, networking, and a wide range of technology applications. Responsibilities include evaluating and implementing tools, services, and processes that improve Finance and Operations (F&O) support of IT Systems. This position also works with campus groups to coordinate efforts, leverage collaboration, and provide new solutions while improving the management of existing systems. This role requires ongoing education and training on new systems along with testing, evaluating, and demonstrating to management whether the specific new technology will provide improvement. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
- Associate's degree in Computer Information Technology, Computer Technology Integration; Networking Technology, or related areas and two years of experience in the Information Technology field related to the position's role; or a
- Bachelor's degree from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience in the Information Technology Field related to the position's role, or a
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Math or Engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in the Information Technology Field related to the position's role; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Journey level requires an additional one year of experience.
- Advanced level requires an additional two years of experience. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with vendors and campus personnel regarding equipment installations and troubleshooting. Ability to integrate the use of principles, theories and practices to develop and communicate technical resource solutions for other technicians.
Strong troubleshooting, consulting, and project management skills in support of F&O, Police, Transportation & Parking and other business units from conception through implementation. Ability to analyze and assess customer needs to develop solutions.
Ability to identify trends and make suggestions for technical modifications to solve existing and future problems.
A valid NC Driver's License or ability to obtain prior to start date. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Familiarity with parking management related hardware and software at a university level such as T2 Systems, Geographic Information System (
GIS), License Plate Recognition (
LPR), the
SKIDATA Parking Access Revenue Control System (
PARCS), iOS/Android mobile devices or similar systems, and have experience supporting an enterprise application with users across multiple organizations.
Advanced experience planning, coordinating, and leading projects with varying complexities involving a diverse customer base.
Intermediate to advanced experience configuring and supporting specialized business or mobile devices, and network-connected devices.
Intermediate to advanced experience implementing processes on the network and workstations to protect sensitive data and ensure compliance with information security policies. |

Special Physical/Mental Requirements |
Ability to frequently travel to the
UNC-Chapel Hill campus and the Town of Chapel Hill, including frequent pedestrian travel and/or transport of equipment which requires a valid North Carolina Driver's License. Ability to move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, manipulating hand tools such as screw drivers, power drills and cutting equipment, and performing tasks on ladders or enclosed spaces, with or without a reasonable accommodation. Maintenance of equipment requires strong motor skills
and physical mobility.
Ability to adhere to safety requirements by wearing appropriate personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, hard hats, full-length pants, and closed-toe shoes. Ability to recognize colors and shapes.
Ability to perform work duties within various service call locations including but not limited to construction or renovation zones, hospital premises, chemical and radiation storage facilities, warehouse storage zones, and high-traffic parking areas. As adesignated mandatory (emergency) employee, the employee is subject to significant physical effort, depending upon the emergency's nature. Occasional outdoor work or travel in adverse weather conditions may be necessary due to the location andcriticality of certain equipment.
Demonstrated ability to identify and avoid hazards that may lead to injury, whether physical, electrical, chemical, biological, or otherwise. |
