The UI Cancer Center is seeking applicants for the position of Human Resources (HR) Associate II. Under the supervision of the Director of Human Resources, this position provides comprehensive HR support, focusing on recruitment and onboarding, payroll functions, employee relations, and annual reporting and training, all while ensuring adherence to university policies and procedures. The HR Associate II provides guidance and counsel to hiring managers and serves as a resource to employees, aiming to ensure both employee success and the operational needs of the UI Cancer Center.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Primarily responsible for all activities related to the search/interview/hiring process, including coordination of orientation and onboarding.
  • Partner with the hiring manager and/or unit manager to assist with the development of job descriptions, and the overall search, recruitment, and selection process for all employee classifications (academic professional, civil service, extra help, student employees), including conducting reference checks, extending, and negotiating offers.
  • Serves as a resource to search committees to provide guidance and information related to searches (recruitment/interviewing resources/tools) and communication relating to the progress and status of the search and selection process.
  • Assist with managing the human resources life cycle for all employee classifications including recruitment, selection, onboarding, appointment and payroll processing, performance reviews, leave reporting, retention and exit, and other HR-related duties.
  • Collaborate with campus offices on all HR life cycle and employment processes, as needed, including leave of absence, employee/labor relations, and employee accommodations, ensuring appropriate deadlines, policies, and guidelines are applied and followed; serves as a liaison between all Campus offices and Cancer Center employees
  • Serves as a resource to managers and employees, providing expertise and guidance on HR-related matters, including university policies and procedures.
  • Support the Director of HR and team member(s) to ensure all employment actions and annual training and compliance are completed timely and accurately; collaborate with UI Cancer Center administrative teams as related to appointment changes.
  • Assist with logistical planning for HR-hosted/sponsored orientation, onboarding, manager training, presentations, and meetings.
  • Serve as liaison to the Office of International Services to coordinate visa and immigration processes for international hires, staff, students, and visiting scholars.
  • Ensures compliance with university, state, and federal laws and regulations regarding personnel practices.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications Required:


    1. Bachelor's degree in human resource administration, Management, Organizational Administration, Public Administration, Labor Relations, Business Administration or a field closely related to the position.

    2. Five years of work experience performing professional-level human resources duties.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • At least 3 years of experience working in higher education, State, or State University Civil Service System.
    • Strong communication skills, specifically in providing feedback, observations, and conclusions to influence and achieve positive outcomes.
    • Ability to communicate effectively through verbal and written means with individuals and groups, including audiences at all levels of the organization.
    • Demonstrate ability to utilize technology to optimize program implementation and management: Office Suite/365, cloud applications, applicant tracking system, etc.
    • Ability to recommend and implement effective recruitment strategies.
    • Excellent project management, organization, and time management skills.
