Job Summary:

This position is for a full-time PRA in the laboratory of Mia Smith, DVM, PhD, who studies the role of B lymphocytes in the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes (T1D). This position involves coordinating prospective study participants, administrating consent forms, collecting blood samples from patients, isolating human cells from whole blood and tissue (e.g. spleen and lymph nodes), and subsequently analyzing the samples using basic and advanced immunological assays, such as spectral flow cytometry, mass cytometry (CyTOF), and cell processing for single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq). The position also involves mouse handling and colony management, mouse tissue isolation and processing, and subsequent assays such as genotyping using PCR analysis and phenotyping using flow cytometry. Other assays routinely performed in the lab include, the isolation of antigen-specific B cells using nanoparticles, ELISA, cell and tissue culture (primary cells and cell lines), protein/antibody isolation and conjugation, human DNA isolation, qPCR, RT-qPCR, and western blot. Other responsibilities for this position include maintaining an accurate, detailed, and up-to-date- lab notebook and analysis of results using computer programs, such as Microsoft Excel, FlowJo, PhenoGraph, Cell Engine, and GraphPad Prism. The person for this position is expected to assist in drafting publication ready figures using programs such as Adobe Illustrator, Microsoft Power point, and GraphPad Prism. This person may also assist in writing drafts for manuscripts, grants, and presentations. Key Responsibilities / Duties:
- 60%: Perform immunological laboratory techniques, such as cell isolation, antibody staining, flow cytometry or mass cytometry
- 20%: Data analysis using computer programs, such as FlowJo, PhenoGraph, and GraphPad Prism
- 10%: Order supplies, organize and maintain laboratory space, and maintain safe working environment
- 10%: Provide oversight and training to others in the laboratory

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, related field
A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year for year basis. Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire. Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience or background within an experimental or wet lab
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of basic laboratory techniques including safety procedures and techniques
- Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution
- Demonstrated commitment and leadership ability to advance diversity and inclusion
- Knowledge of basic human anatomy, physiology medical terminology
- Ability to interpret and master complex research protocol information
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Excel, and Word

Anticipated Pay Range:
|
The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $45,000 - 57,240. The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level. Your total compensation goes beyond the number on your paycheck.
