Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The primary purpose of Cogeneration Systems is the generation of steam to the various buildings on the University campus and to the
UNC Hospitals. Steam is critical to the operations of the University and
UNC Hospitals. It is used for heating, cooling, domestic hot water, sterilization of surgical instrument, distilled water production, food preparation and dish washing. Cogeneration Systems also generates electricity as a byproduct of the steam generation. It can presently supply about 30 percent of the peak campus electrical load. Cogeneration Systems is part of
UNC Energy Services. |
Position Summary |
This position will work within Cogeneration Systems in both the Operations and Maintenance workgroups. The position will be performing entry level tasks on a rotational basis for each workgroup. The position will provide the opportunity to gain knowledge and hands-on experience to be able to perform tasks independently once trained. Because power plant operation is a learned skill, the position will be primarily hands-on and shadowing experienced operators as they perform their job functions. When working with the maintenance workgroup, the position will assist with maintenance on the power plant, steam plant and/or landfill gas generator. The position will be performing preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance, and repairs under the direction of experienced mechanics. This is an entry-level position to gain insight into the utilities industry for potential career opportunities in the future. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification. Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. |

- Position requires climbing ladder/stairs, ability to move 50+ pounds, and ability to wear self-contained breathing apparatus

WORK
ENVIRONMENT
AND
CONDITIONS:
The environmental conditions vary tremendously from air conditioning and heat to dusty, hot and humid, cold conditions. This position will be required to work in all conditions for various lengths of time depending on the operational requirements. This position will be required to enter confined spaces or hazardous environments with the appropriate
PPE in accordance with established procedures.
Must be able to wear required
PPE for the specific job, including but not limited to: appropriate uniforms, safety shoes/boots, hardhat, safety harnesses, fall protection, respirators, face masks or face shields, and protective gloves; ability to work in stressful conditions and under critical timelines.
With appropriate training - ability to learn to operate a forklift, backhoe, truck-mounted hole differs/cranes, machine shop tools such as saws, drill presses, bucket truck lifts, cable splicing tools and equipment.
