The Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at UC Irvine Health School of Medicine is dedicated to the diagnosis and understanding of human diseases through biomedical and clinical research. Using the latest technologies, our pathologists help advance medicine by finding better ways of diagnosing, managing and treating diseases.


Your Role on the Team

The Staff Research Associate I will work in Dr. Elizabeth Head's neuroscience research laboratory that identifies the key factors associated with Alzheimer disease within the Down syndrome population. Experiments are conducted using a variety of techniques such as immunohistochemistry, western blotting, biomarker quantification, microscopy and digital pathology. Both human and animal brain/blood/tissue samples are examined.

The primary responsibility of this position will be to provide support to post-doctoral scholars and graduate students in their research projects. This may include techniques such as: immunohistochemistry, biomarker quantification, western blotting, brain tissue sectioning and digital slide scanning. In addition, this position will also assist the lab manager in general laboratory maintenance duties, including routine lab procedures such as: equipment maintenance, solution preparation, re-stocking of lab supplies and helping various teams in completing tasks when needed.

Expectations:
1. Full-time, 40-hour/week employment with a Mon-Fri schedule of either 8am-5pm or 9am-6pm with a one-hour lunch break.
2. Work will be on-site in the laboratory (no remote work)
3. Job includes assisting in existing lab members' projects; this position will not be associated with independent research projects
4. Must show a desire to constantly learn and master new techniques
5. Willingness to assist in tasks when the team is short-staffed and outside their normal job expectations


What It Takes to be Successful

Required:

  • Experience with basic tissue sectioning, immunohistochemistry and western blotting
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Willingness to provide help proactively when a need is presented
  • Ability to prioritize workload and work both within a multi-person team and under the direction of a single supervisor
  • Ability to exhibit flexibility during unexpected challenges
  • Ability to follow detailed written instructions
  • Ability to record results/observations and maintain an organized, legible lab notebook
  • Ability to use computers
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Forms, Calendar)
  • At least 1 year of experience working in a neuropathology, neuroscience or related laboratory.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of basic brain anatomy
  • Knowledge of basic cell biology background and data interpretation
  • Exposure to biomarker quantification
  • Digital pathology using HALO, Keyence, Imaris, QuPath, ImageJ, etc.
  • Data analysis and graphing using SigmaPlot, SPSS, etc.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
