HJF is seeking a part-time (10 hours/week) Research Psychologist I to support The Suicide Care, Prevention, and Research Initiative (Suicide CPR Initiative) within the Medical and Clinical Psychology (MPS) department of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical, and programmatic support services to MPS. The Research Psychologist will serve as a member of a multidisciplinary team and support multiple research projects related to suicide prevention, intervention and postvention. One primary function of the Research Psychologist will be to contribute to the review of records belonging to military suicide decedents. The ideal candidate will have an expertise in psychology, as well as prior experience conducting research within the field of military suicide prevention. The incumbent should be well-suited to provide subject matter expertise on military programs, policies, and practices related to these research topics.

This position will be in support of the Suicide CPR Initiative, previously known as the Laboratory for the Treatment of Suicide-Related Ideation and Behavior, which was established in 2006. Dr. Holloway, the Director of the Suicide CPR Initiative, is a clinical psychologist and an intervention scientist who is primarily interested in developing and empirically evaluating novel interventions for suicide risk reduction. The Suicide CPR Initiative is strategically in a unique position to focus on the problem of military suicide, given its origins at USU and its established partnerships with the Department of Defense and Veterans Affairs, as well as national and international collaborators and stakeholders. Overall, the mission of the Suicide CPR Initiative is threefold: CARE: To develop effective interventions targeted at reducing suicidal thoughts and/or behaviors; PREVENTION: To save lives through education, intervention, science, and advocacy; RESEARCH: To advance suicide intervention science and practice.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. Note: This site requires that the incumbent has lived in the US for three out of the past five years.


Responsibilities

  • Provide expert psychological and research support for multiple projects focused on military mental health and suicide prevention. Serve as member of a multidisciplinary research team.
  • Conduct comprehensive reviews of military suicide decedents' medical, administrative, and investigatory records. Provide psychological subject matter expertise in analyzing records documenting diagnoses and treatment for decedents with diverse psychological conditions.
  • Assist in the preparation of written executive summaries and timelines for each suicide decedents' record. Actively participate in group discussions and consensus meetings associated with death review projects.
  • Offer in-depth knowledge of military culture and context for coding and analyzing military records. Share expertise on military programs, policies, and practices related to suicide prevention, intervention and postvention.
  • Assist in the preparation of project-related reports and deliverables. Contribute to the development of grant applications and/or manuscripts.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor, including participation in required training for the role.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Doctoral degree required in Clinical Psychology.
  • Minimum of 0-2 years' experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Applicants must have evidence of a strong research background as demonstrated through scholarly publications and/or presentations, a postdoctoral fellowship, or other work experience.
  • Prior research experience required; preferably within the field of military suicide prevention.
  • Prior military service and/or experience working with military populations required.
  • Ability to work independently as well as a part of a team.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1 Public Trust and Common Access Card (CAC).

Physical Capabilities

  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in an office setting.

Compensation

  • The hourly pay range for this position is $35.48-$40.00. Actual hourly pay will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
