Senior Data Engineer (REMOTE or BIRMINGHAM, AL)
General Summary
Southern Research (SR) is at a pivotal moment in its 84-year history. At the start of 2022, SR launched a new strategic plan focused on translational research in the life sciences. SR intends to invest over $150 million in this new strategy, including development of new facilities, platforms, and programs. Downtown Birmingham sees over $700M in extramural biomedical research every year, including over $300M from the NIH, in large part due to the contributions of Southern Research and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The Senior Data Engineer will report to the Director of Platform Informatics. The Senior Data Engineer's role is crucial in implementing and maintaining healthcare data interoperability strategies, focusing on integrating clinical and genomic data from various sources. This role is essential in achieving the organization's goals of integrating complex healthcare and genomic data while maintaining high standards of data quality and security.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities


  • Data Integration and Architecture

    • Implement EMR/EHR integrations and clinical data model transformations into common data models (e.g., OMOP, i2b2)
    • Develop and manage data pipelines for sequencing variant call file (.vcf) reannotation and ETL processing of clinicogenomics datasets
    • Create FHIR, REST API integrations/extractions, and XML/Document data mappings


  • Software Development and Management

    • Contribute to the development and management of SMART on FHIR apps
    • Participate in the entire software development life cycle for EMR/EHR and molecular data integration projects
    • Implement and maintain data quality assurance processes


  • Cloud Infrastructure and Data Security

    • Utilize AWS cloud infrastructure for clinicogenomic data architectures and resources
    • Ensure compliance with HIPAA standards and other relevant healthcare regulations


  • Collaboration and Communication

    • Work closely with internal teams, including DBAs, architects, analysts, and programmers
    • Assist in documenting and communicating architectural designs and decisions to stakeholders




Requirements/Minimum Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or related field; Master's degree preferred
  • 5+ years of experience in healthcare data engineering or related field
  • Proficiency in FHIR, HL7, SQL, Amazon Redshift, and/or Snowflake
  • Strong understanding of EMR data standards, coding schemes, and ontologies


Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience with SMART apps, FHIR, OAuth 2.0, and EHR integrations
  • Comprehensive knowledge of sequencing variant formats and annotation databases
  • Familiarity with HIPAA standards and healthcare data security practices
