WisCARES Community Medicine Clinical Instructor

Job Summary:

This position provides instruction through the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine at WisCARES Community Clinic.

This position will provide veterinary medical care to companion animals of WisCARES clients and provide teaching to veterinary students and interns (if applicable) through clinical training, didactic teaching in rounds, and clinical outreach. Clinical training currently occurs at WisCARES Community Veterinary Clinic.

The incumbent must have strong communication skills, an ability to work with clients with diverse needs and be comfortable working with clients from diverse backgrounds.

Responsibilities:

Primary responsibilities include providing medical care for owned companion animals while teaching and supervising students, interns, and residents (if applicable) on general practice medicine and procedures; training veterinary students and interns to find and examine multiple solutions to the problems that financially restricted clients and communities might face; pursuing excellence in the clinical skills of trainees; and supporting other educational aspects of the program as needed. Cases at the clinic include routine wellness, sick pet appointments, urgent care and occasional emergent care.

The Clinical Instructor will also participate in general clinical operational, outreach and administrative functions depending on relevant interests and experience in programmatic functioning. This position will assist with the growth of new programmatic functions for the WisCARES clinic and with the development of standards of operation for those programs.

Education:

Required
Terminal Degree
Candidates must have a DVM or equivalent degree with specialized training or experience in providing medical care for financially disadvantaged clients, by start date.


Qualifications:

At least two (2) years of experience working in general practice or community veterinary medicine.

Experience with instruction, mentoring, providing feedback, and setting a positive community for learning.

Proficiency in practical and tactful identification and articulation of strengths, problems, and possible solutions at both an organizational and individual instructional level.

Strong surgical skills are preferred.


License/Certification:

Required
Wisconsin Veterinary License
Must be eligible to obtain and maintain Wisconsin licensure to practice veterinary medicine, by start date.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Additional Information:

The successful candidate will have excellent verbal and written communication skills, sharp attention to detail, and strong organizational skills. They will have experience in population health management for companion animals, high-quality/high-volume spay/neuter, and clinical practice in a shelter setting.

The candidate must show creativity and a proven ability to initiate projects and see them through to a successful completion. Must have a demonstrated ability to work well independently and collaborate in a team environment. Must have the ability to take direction as well as provide leadership. Must be comfortable working with people of all levels of expertise.
