About Us: The UW School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) is a leader in research and innovation, dedicated to improving patient outcomes through advanced data science and analytics. We are seeking an experienced Research Data Scientist (Ontology) for the Wisconsin Health Data Hub (WHDH) program, recently funded by the EDA as part of the Tech Hub (https://news.wisc.edu/federal-funds-awarded-for-biohealth-with-uw-madison-leading-the-way/) initiative, and drives transformative data science projects to enhance healthcare and research at SMPH.

Join our dynamic Informatics and Information Technology team at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison, Wisconsin. We are committed to revolutionizing healthcare through implementation of advanced data science approaches, conducting cutting-edge data-centric research, and generating real-world evidence to improve patient health outcomes at UW Health and beyond. The otologist will focus on data standardization activities.

On a day-to-day basis, the incumbent could expect to engage in the following activities in supporting researchers that use WHDH services:
- Develop/implement and maintain biomedical ontologies to organize and manage data.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define and document data models using ontological principles.
- Assemble EHR data, ensuring data quality and reliability; and transform raw data into standard data models (HL7, FHIR, OMOP, mCODE, i2b2 etc.).
- Design and implement data taxonomy and classification systems to ensure consistent and accurate data organization.
- Conduct ontology mapping and integration to facilitate data interoperability across systems.
- Develop metadata dictionaries as necessary for research datasets.
- Evaluate and apply best practices in ontology development and management to improve data quality and accessibility.
- Provide training and guidance to stakeholders on ontology usage and best practices for data organization.
- Stay updated on industry trends and advancements in ontology development to enhance data management processes.
- Work closely with data governance and security to ensure compliance with privacy regulations (e.g., NIST, HIPAA) when working with healthcare data.


Responsibilities:
Contributes to a research agenda set by a lead researcher by preparing data sets, analyzing them using data science techniques, and presenting the results. Plays a leadership role and may lead a team and/or personnel.

  • 25% Prepares data sets for analysis including cleaning/quality assurance, transformations, restructuring, and integration of multiple data sources
  • 20% Identifies and implements or guides others in implementing appropriate data science techniques to find data patterns and answer research questions chosen by the lead researcher including data visualization, statistical analysis, machine learning, and data mining
  • 10% Organizes and automates project steps for data preparation and analysis
  • 15% Composes and assembles reproducible workflows and reports to clearly articulate patterns to researchers and/or administrators
  • 10% Documents approaches to address research questions and contributes to the establishment of reproducible research methodologies and analysis workflows
  • 10% Develops domain specific terminologies for biomedical data
  • 5% Designs ontology model representations (entities, attributes and their relationships) ensuring that terminologies and ontologies provide adequate domain coverage and are compatible with relevant standards
  • 5% Develops standards-based disease registries and data sets; collaborates with experts to develop and evolve documentation about terminologies and ontologies, including terminology content and associated processes

Education:

Preferred
Terminal Degree
MD or PhD in Computer Science, Data Science Informatics, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, or related disciplines preferred


Qualifications:

Required:
- Experience with biomedical terminologies and standards (e.g., SNOMED CT, ICD, MeSH)
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Preferred:
- Experience with natural language processing and machine learning techniques
- Proficiency with ontology languages and tools (e.g., OWL, RDF, Protege)
- Familiarity with semantic web technologies and standards
- Experience in a biomedical research or clinical environment

Full Time: 100%

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Depending on Qualifications
The starting salary for the position is $90,000 but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.
