ISB is a non-profit biomedical research organization based in Seattle, and focuses on some of the most pressing issues in human health.

The Health & Safety Specialist is a Lead role responsible for planning, implementation, and maintenance of the Institute's health and safety programs and leads the daily operations of the Lab Services team.

Essential Duties:

* Develops, implements, and enforces health and safety policies, procedures, training programs and drills including: chemical safety, ergonomics, illness and injury prevention, building safety, and hazardous materials and work areas

* Leads lab services staff and administers the daily group schedule

* Monitors the procurement, use, storage, and disposal of lab supplies, chemical and biological materials, and is responsible for policies and procedures for laboratory waste streams

* Ensures regulatory compliance with federal and state regulations and communicates with the appropriate government agencies

* Provides administrative support to the Institute Officer and Committees for Biological Safety, Institutional Safety, and Chemical Hygiene

* Lead all safety inspection efforts

* Ensures ISB has all relevant, required licenses and permits required to conduct its research.

* Investigates any potential or actual exposure incidents to any infectious or otherwise hazardous material; determines the cause of the incident or risk and recommends corrective action.



  • Perform lab tests - mycoplasma, create stocks of E. coli calcium-competent cells and make growth curves.
  • Ensure HMIS and MSDS documentation remains current; manage electronic chemical inventory system.


* Develops and maintains contingency plans according to regulations and insurance requirements (e.g., fire prevention, hazardous spills)

* Acts as on-site point of contact for third party Health and Safety service provider relationships; maintains a master contact list; ensures that appropriate service agreements are in place and that vendors are appropriately trained and qualified.

* Provide administrative oversight of tissue culture suites and the lab programs

* Other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities:

The Health and Safety Specialist (Lead) has no direct reports.

Required Education, Skills & Experience:

* BS in applicable field (e.g. chemistry, public health, occupational health/safety, biology), or equivalent combination of training and experience

* One (1) or more years of experience as an EH&S professional in a laboratory or similar setting

* Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing

* Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with a diverse population and range of personalities

* Ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of issues in a lab/research environment

All ISB staff members are expected to have baseline technical skills and the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately over email, the intranet/forum, etc. Employees should be able to use Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint at a functional level.
