About the Department
The Department of Computer Science is an academic teaching and research department in the College of Engineering. It is a large and complex unit that encompasses research intensive, teaching intensive, and professional activities. It is also one of the largest such departments in the nation by the number of faculty and students, and its total budget and size are comparable to, or larger than, a number of NC State University colleges and divisions.
Essential Job Duties
The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a DevOps administrator, work as a member of the CSC IT team, and report directly to the IT manager. This position supports developing, hardening, deploying, and maintaining application and OS automation deployment software. Collaborate with development and infrastructure teams to integrate applications/OS configurations seamlessly with on-premise virtualization environments and cloud services.
Essential Job Duties:

  • Develop, manage, and support automated models for infrastructure to improve developer, systems administrator, and end-user experience.
  • Use configuration management tools to automate, provision, configure, and manage departmental infrastructure.
  • Serve as the DevOps matter expert for supported environments
  • Respond to service outages to ensure satisfactory uptime of all services.
  • Develop software and scripts to connect and integrate systems.
  • Work with open-source communities to improve the software we depend on.
  • Work with the rest of the organization to develop custom automation software to fulfill business processes in our department.
  • Serve as the backup to the departmental infrastructure administrator
  • Perform regular maintenance on the services to keep products patched and secure.
  • Write documentation for common issues and workflows.
  • Use containerization to develop, test, and deliver consistent apps in large-scale systems.
  • Collaborate with developers and system administrators to ensure they adhere to established processes.
  • Work with management and senior system administrators to inform them of any situations related to DevOps processes and their security that could become problems and set proper workloads and expectations.
  • Contribute to the Campus IT Service community.


Other Work/Responsibilities:
This position includes a variety of tasks, activities, and responsibilities typical to all CSC IT Staff. Proactive participation in the CSC support activities, learning with IT, problem reporting, and carrying of approved smart devices and NCSU badge during work hours. This position will advise IT Manager on DevOps processes, best practices, technological issues and planning, and goal setting. Additionally, provide LAN administration. This position may require occasional weekend and evening work during on-call support rotation.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree with nine credit hours in programming and one year of experience in business application consulting or development; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Other Required Qualifications

  • CI/CD pipelines: Understanding of continuous integration and continuous deployment processes
  • Version control: Proficiency in using Git for managing codebase.
  • Scripting languages: Proficiency in Python and Bash scripting for automation and development tasks.
  • Proficiency in following and teaching modern development best practices (Object-oriented programming, version control, code review, auditing, automated testing). Comfortable working in legacy environments, making iterative improvements over time (as well as large-scale upgrades to existing infrastructures).
  • Agile Methodology.
  • Ability to communicate effectively so important information is disseminated promptly and work/workload is managed efficiently.
  • Respond to each trouble ticket promptly and professionally in person, by email (helpdesk management system), or by phone; diagnose, fix, and escalate each case as required.
  • Document solutions where appropriate. Prioritize appropriately with attention to detail and ability to produce solid and precise documentation.
  • The candidate must be a self-starter, customer-oriented, team player, and have strong communication skills. Group interaction and teamwork skills are a necessity, as are excellent interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Containerization: Familiarity with Docker
  • Puppet (Configuration Management Tool)
  • Familiarity with other scripting languages (PHP, JavaScript, Perl, C)
  • Cloud platforms: Experience with AWS services such as Lambda, EC2, and CodePipeline
  • Infrastructure as Code: Familiarity with Ansible, Terraform, and Kubernetes
  • Familiarity with HPC file systems and clustering is a plus.
  • Some experience with customer service
