Job Description

Allstate Investments Climate Investments Team ('Climate Investments') is seeking an Associate.

Climate Investments targets investments in both Decarbonization and Natural Capital in North America, Europe and Asia. Decarbonization Capital includes segments in Alternative Energy (e.g., sustainable aviation fuel, green hydrogen, etc.); AgTech / Food (e.g. alternative protein, seed genetics, etc.); Carbon Capture, Storage and Utilization and Carbon Markets; Circular Economy (e.g. waste to value); Sustainable Materials and Sustainable Transport. Natural Capital includes segments in farmland, timberland and water. Climate Investments targets both (i) fund and co-investments with leading climate financial sponsors and other partners around the world and (ii) direct investments. Allstate's existing Climate Investments private equity portfolio is $1B+.

The Associate will assist in all phases of investing - origination, due diligence, evaluation, execution, monitoring, managing, and exiting of portfolio investments. The Associate is responsible for working with the Head of the Climate Investments and other team members to evaluate investment opportunities. Decarbonization and Natural Capital investments are an important component to Allstate's long-term strategy to: (i) make investments in companies and technologies to help the world get to Net Zero by 2050 and (ii) generate non-concessionary returns. With that goal in mind, Climate Investments is looking for a talented individual with broad based private equity, mergers and acquisition and/or debt / equity background to complement the existing team.

Responsibilities:

  • Working within the Climate Investments team, the Associate will be expected to complete the following:

  • Perform quantitative and qualitative analysis used to support the underwriting of potential investment opportunities

  • Participate in idea generation, research and analysis activities that create actionable investments

  • Travel (both domestically and internationally) to originate investment opportunities and / or participate in on-site investment due diligence

  • Prepare internal memoranda and other materials used to support investment recommendations and to communicate with internal constituents including Allstate's Investment Committee(s)

  • Closely monitor the performance of existing investments in each of the portfolios, including financial analysis of the underlying portfolio companies and/or assets

  • Evaluate market conditions for decarbonization and natural capital investments in existing and new geographies and provide corresponding information, analysis and merit to support these investments

  • Collaborate with Risk Management to develop elevated governance, oversight, boundaries and exit strategies

  • Provide support for internal communications and elsewhere on an as-needed basis; utilize expertise to advise and influence our clients and Allstate Leaders.

CHALLENGES WITHIN THE FIRST 12 MONTHS:

The most significant challenges for the Climate Investments Associate for the first 12 months include:

  • Learning the organization, culture and processes; gaining the respect of the investments' leadership team

  • Establishing credibility with and earning the trust of the Climate Investments team members and the other asset teams within Allstate

  • Develop sufficient knowledge of current portfolio holdings to preserve strong financial performance and seek attractive investment opportunities

  • Improve financial results for the business unit

  • Effectively help to develop and mentor the junior members of the team to build broad and deep bench strength

The successful candidate will have a minimum of five years of work experience in investment banking, leveraged finance, private equity or consulting. Prior experience will ideally include leverage lending, distressed debt experience, direct exposure to private equity and/or industry experience in decarbonization or natural capital. Additional skills required include:

  • Proven ability to simultaneously manage multiple investment-related projects in a time critical, transaction oriented environment. (Advanced)

  • Demonstrated experience developing/evaluating financial models, analyzing financial statements, understanding various valuation methodologies, and working in a transaction oriented environment (Advanced)

  • Strong command of accounting and finance. (Advanced)

  • Knowledge of, and interest in decarbonization and natural capital private equity markets. (Intermediate / Advanced)

  • Eagerness to work hard in a team-oriented, performance based environment. (Advanced)

  • A self-starter that requires limited oversight in the completion of individual projects. (Advanced)

  • Excellent verbal, written communication and presentation skills. (Advanced)

  • Very strong proficiency with Microsoft Office. (Advanced)

  • Experience with Bloomberg or Capital IQ. (Intermediate / Advanced)

Educational Background:

  • A bachelor's degree is required. MBA is preferred. A CFA is a plus.

  • Be willing to adhere to the following in order to ensure adherence to Allstate Investments compliance requirements and policies:

  • Provide the Investments Compliance team with a list of investment accounts over which you have significant influence;

  • Provide consent, through a signed statement, allowing Investments Compliance to receive duplicate confirmations of transactions in such accounts;

  • Pre-clear through the Pre-Trade Clearing Process any personal security trades as will be further described upon employment. The Pre-Trade Clearing Process involves a check against a restricted security/issuer list, maintained by Investments Compliance, based on Allstate Investments' and Allstate's activities and dealings in the financial markets;

  • Answer certain compliance questions regarding any affiliations with investment advisers, violations of state or federal securities laws, or actions taken against you by securities regulators and annually confirm compliance with the Allstate Code of Ethics and the Allstate Investments Code of Conduct;

  • Provide Investments Compliance with a complete report of their current securities holdings in which the employee has, or acquires, any direct or indirect beneficial ownership. An employee is presumed to be a beneficial owner of securities that are held by his or her immediate "family members" sharing the individual's household. Household family members include married or common-law spouses, domestic partners, partners defined by civil union and resident dependent children.

Compensation and Benefits Package:

A competitive compensation and benefits package will be provided, including an attractive base salary and an annual target bonus opportunity based on the company's and the individuals performance.

Compensation

Compensation offered for this role is $130,000.00 - 190,000.00 annually and is based on experience and qualifications.
