HX5 is currently seeking a Computational Fluids Dynamics (CFD) Analyst to join our team in Cleveland, Ohio in support of the GEARS contract at NASA Glenn Research Center.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The selected CFD Analyst will perform thermo-fluid modeling of two-phase cryogenic propellant systems using a commercial CFD code such as ANSYS FLUENT or CFX, STAR-CCM, or FLOW-3D. The CFD Analyst will develop two-phase CFD models of two-phase cryogenic propellant tanks and transfer systems and anchor them to heritage ground and flight data.

Work may also involve performing predictive CFD modeling for NASA's commercial partners that are developing cryogenic propellant systems for NASA's lunar system architectures for the Human Lander System (HLS) which is a part of the return to the Moon program. This will include support SpaceX developing computational thermo/fluid dynamic models of the Starship vehicle cryogenic propellant management systems. It would include providing recommendations for docking Starship vehicles and will also involve performing propellant sloshing CFD modeling to validate propellant settling and docking approach.

Required Skills:

  • Exposure or experience with commercial CFD codes such as ANSYS FLUENT, CFX, STAR-CCM, or FLOW-3D.
  • Good knowledge and understanding of two-phase thermodynamics as well as heat and mass transfer desired.
  • Good understanding of programming languages such as Fortran, C, C++, or Matlab would help with implementing customized UDF's for heat/mass transfer.

Other Desired Skills:

  • Understanding of two-phase physics and knowledge of fluid dynamics.
  • Fluid sloshing expertise.
  • Team oriented with the ability to work independently as well.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with 2 to 5 years of experience.
  • Master's degree with 0 to 3 years of experience.

Other Position Requirements:

  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship or US Permanent Residency is a requirement for this position.
  • Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.
