Are you looking for a meaningful job where you can make a difference every day? Our vibrant and welcoming public garden is seeking dedicated Housekeepers/Custodians to help keep our spaces clean, inviting and ready for visitors to enjoy. This is a temporary position by State of North Carolina policies and may work up to 40 hours each week for 11 months each year.

Pay is $16 - $18 per hour, depending on experience. Multiple positions are available and applications will be accepted until all roles are filled.

Working at least one shift on a weekend is required. Depending on your availability, regular shifts can be scheduled between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. during regular campus operations or could extend to 10:30 p.m. during our Winter Lights show (mid-November through December 31 each year).

There are no state benefits with positions considered "temporary"; however, employees do receive an employee discount, health and wellness discounts and may be eligible for healthcare coverage under the Affordable Care Act based on hours worked.

These positions are responsible for performing a variety of duties associated with the care and cleaning of work areas as well as assisting in the preparation and setup of rooms for meetings, conferences, educational programs and special events.

Responsibilities include frequently sanitizing of guest and staff areas, sweeping, mopping, waxing, buffing and refinishing floors; daily vacuuming and periodically shampooing of carpets; general spot cleaning as needed; cleaning of porches and terraces; ensure restrooms and break rooms are in excellent condition including cleaning toilets, hard surfaces, replacement of paper products, cleaning metal/mirrored surfaces, loading dishwasher; cleanup of food preparation areas; clean windows, walls, woodwork, light fixtures and other hard surfaces; empty trash and recycle receptacles, operating laundry service machines and performing laundry handling duties; maintain the Arboretum's visitor standards of excellence; keep walkways within 25' of building clear of debris/ice to insure safety during bad weather conditions; and, clean up after special events, facility rentals and meetings.

These positions may also be asked to interpret building set up requests, the installation and break down of chairs, tables, stages and other event requirements and assist staff who will be directly involved in supporting maintenance of the event. This will include knowledge of table and chair configuration that will consider the client's preference, safety standards and Arboretum protocol. This role will also assist in laundry needs for the events, labor or materials to ensure the Arboretum is able to maintain and fulfill housekeeping needs and in safe and proper use of materials.

Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
The Facilities unit of The North Carolina Arboretum is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the 434-acre campus to meet the needs of employees and visitors. The duties of the unit include both strategic planning and day-to-day operations with particular emphasis on buildings and premises. Facilities is responsible for building and basic grounds maintenance, cleaning, vending, health and safety, and set up and break down of event space management.

Minimum Education, Experience, and Skills
Some knowledge of cleaning procedures, ability to follow instructions and to perform medium to heavy physical work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Computer skills are required for corresponding through emails and reporting time worked.

Competencies
Technical Knowledge:
Extreme accuracy is required in this work due to the inherent dangers of working with cleaning chemicals and solvents.
There is a high consequence of error in this position. Injury to the employee or to a guest and damage to Arboretum facilities may result if this position does not use extreme caution with cleaning products.
Communication:
Employees work from oral instruction and written directions. The employee is required to be able to perform the majority of tasks assigned with little supervision after being given directions and training in all areas of housekeeping and setup. The employee has daily contact with Arboretum staff, volunteers, and guests and is responsible for creating and maintaining a favorable learning environment. The employee is expected to maintain a friendly, courteous, and helpful attitude at all times.
This position requires an intense awareness of the overall condition of the building and surrounding area from the guest's point of view.
Some knowledge of cleaning procedures, ability to follow instructions and to perform medium to heavy physical work, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Physical Capabilities:
A majority of this position requires physical effort, some examples include moving heavy objects, walking up and down stairs, bending to clean things low to the ground, lifting heavy coffee pots, reaching to clean high places, climbing ladders, pushing a mop or vacuum. Some Arboretum facilities have large rooms and require high endurance to mop or buff the entire space. Most of this position's work is indoors with the exception of the verandah or outdoor events. This position would be expected to complete duties outside or on property as needed, when directed by supervisor. Employees working in the areas of cleaning and floor-finishing duties are exposed to potentially hazardous chemicals. Equipment and tools include low and high-speed buffers, vacuum cleaners, window washing tools, brooms, dust pans, dust mops, wet mops, brushes to clean restrooms, buffing and stripping pads, and cleaning chemicals.
