Scope of Position:

Coordinate a safe and fun swimming pool experience while preserving camp adherence to state and local operating procedures and oversee assistant lifeguards and/or other lifeguards.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:



  • Minimum High School Graduate or equivalent required.
  • Must have a valid Driver's License.
  • Hold standard lifeguard, CPR, and first aid certifications.
  • 2 seasons of summer camp experience or 1 year in equivalent work required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have current waterfront certification.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:



  • Desire to work with youth.
  • Ability to supervise and provide guidance to staff and campers.
  • Ability to diffuse stressful situations with staff and campers.
  • Be a Christian with a strong, demonstrative commitment to following Jesus Christ, and biblical principles, who is enthusiastic, energetic, and creative in spiritual leadership.
  • Possess leadership skills with the ability to plan, originate, organize, and execute special programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Supervise and lead all swim sessions to ensure adherence to state and local operating procedures.
  • Plan, implement, and communicate with lifeguards and watchers of pool schedule and program details.
  • Conduct weekly swim tests for campers on the first day of camp.
  • Plan and coordinate a swimming elective to teach campers to swim.
  • Lead pool games for cabin activities and other scheduled swimming events.
  • Coordinate vacuuming at minimum, one pool each day on an alternating basis, in collaboration with Service Crew.
  • Maintain cleanliness of pool house, pool deck, and surrounding areas.
  • Assist the Creative team with organized activities.
  • Organize and complete 3 water chemical tests for each pool daily, in collaboration with Service Crew.
  • Assist in the set-up and teardown of various areas around camp as the program dictates.
  • Help unload, move, and store supplies.
  • Attend and participate in all staff meetings, orientation, and other staff events.


General Duties:



  • Foster and nurture Christian faith and discipleship in visible, fruitful ways to, and with campers
  • Attend and participate in programs and spiritual activities.
  • Enforce respect for personal property, camp equipment, and facilities.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with all staff, volunteers, and campers.
  • Enforce adherence to camp and Salvation Army policies and procedures.
  • Ensure and provide supervision and physical/emotional safety for campers and staff.
  • Participate and/or assist in all summer camp programs as required e.g., chapel, staff meetings, campfire, camp-wide games, night-watch, free-time, electives, rise and shine duty, etc.
  • Ensure and assist in the cleanliness of cabins and outside areas.
  • May be required to serve as Break Day Supervisor at times during the season.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:



  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, hike, and twist continuously for up to 15-20 minutes or prolonged periods at a time.
  • Ability to grasp, push, and pull objects.
  • Ability to lift to 25 lbs. on occasion up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to perform swimming rescues on swimmers in distress including approaching, breaking holds, and carrying people, which may require removal of the swimmer from the water (who may weigh from 50-300 lbs.).
  • Physical ability to respond to a variety of situations; must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.


WORKING CONDITIONS:



  • There may be phone and in-person contact with others from diverse backgrounds who may be angry, hostile, confused, or frustrated.
  • May be required to work in all areas of camp including, but not limited to, the kitchen, dish room, laundry facility, and grounds.

MISCELLANEOUS:

The Salvation Army does have a dress code. This will be shared with you at the time of employment.

The candidate chosen for this position will be required to pass a motor vehicle record check. They must have a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
