About the Job

The position is responsible for: Providing confidential advice, counsel and representation to eligible student clients on the Twin Cities and system campuses in areas of the law identified in the SLS Schedule of Benefits and determined by the directing attorney.

This is a 100% time, 12-months annual renewable appointment for 2 years with a possibility of extension in job code 9732SL (Sr Staff Attorney I) or 9733SL (Sr Staff Attorney II), depending on qualifications and experience.

Duties and Responsibilities: (This description does not include all possible responsibilities in this work)

  • Represent student clients in immigration cases before government agencies and in court proceedings
  • Prepare all necessary legal documents, including applications, petitions, appeals and waivers
  • Research and analyze complex immigration law issues
  • Provide legal advice and counsel on all aspects of immigration law
  • Effectively communicate with clients regarding their matters
  • Monitor and keep abreast of all changes in immigration law and advise clients accordingly
  • Develop strategies to resolve immigration-related issues
  • Assist in developing, creating and presenting educational programs to stakeholders
  • Participate in UMN and Office of Student Affairs events and committees

GENERAL PROVISIONS: The Immigration Attorney will work with and provide assistance to unit leads, managers and other departments throughout the university on immigration law and other issues in their areas of expertise.

INDEPENDENCE and DECISION MAKING: The immigration attorney will work under minimal supervision and has the discretion to make daily decisions. Generally, operates with broad latitude in a complex environment. Looks for supervisory approvals when significant changes to process are considered and additional resources for task completion are required.

COMPLEXITY and PROBLEM SOLVING: May have to respond/adapt to changing conditions or circumstances, requiring creative solutions and new approaches.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • For 9732SL (Sr Staff Attorney I): JD from an accredited law school and admission to Minnesota State bar and at least 4 years of experience
  • For 9733SL (Sr Staff Attorney II): JD from an accredited law school and admission to Minnesota State bar and at least 8 years of experience
  • Able to work with clients from a diverse background
  • Able to handle multiple cases simultaneously
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Some limited travel systemwide (UMD, UMC, etc)
  • Able to work independently and meet deadlines

PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Licensed in Minnesota
About the Department

The University of Minnesota Student Legal Service (SLS) is a unit within the Office of Student Affairs under the direction of the Vice President for Student Affairs, Calvin Phillips. Student Legal Services at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities Campus is seeking an experienced immigration attorney with firm knowledge and understanding of immigration law. The Immigration Lawyer will be responsible for representing student clients in immigration cases, preparing legal documents, and providing legal advice.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $83,000-$88,000 for 9732SL and $103,000-$108,000 for 9733SL; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: 75%-100% Appointment
