Nokia Mobile Networks Space and Defense Tribe explores new technologies for defense and space technologies often requiring new capabilities for Customers, including Commercial Operators, US Government and NATO customers. Critical to those capabilities is user devices.

A Space and Defense User Device Architect utilizes their technical and communications skills to deliver design artifacts for highly secure technology products with unwavering professionalism. This includes:



  • Interface with the customers (US Government/NATO and Commercial).
  • Research Defense and Public Safety Device design challenges and technology solutions.
  • Author Requirements and Design documents for product development per Customer Specifications.
  • Contribute to Nokia Technology roadmaps and Intellectual property.



As part of the team, you will:



  • Serve as the key technical architect on Defense and Public Safety application for User Devices, secure communication capabilities, Device peripherals supporting tactical deployable 4G/5G, Bluetooth, WIFI, GPS restricted design applications, Security, Sensors, V2X, Sidelink, Low Size-Weight-Power Platforms, Multi-Hop Relay Networks, Drone communication links and autonomous uncrewed capabilities
  • Provide subject matter expertise (SME) to research and evaluation on technical approaches for implementing new device features in support of RAN Network capabilities required to operate within customer-defined Defense and Public Safety use cases.
  • Provide direction and set expectations for the design and development of prototype systems E2E (Device to RAN) geared toward non-traditional 5G/NextG Space and Defense system use cases.
  • Work with other Radio Network SMEs with Nokia MN Ecosystem Team to evaluate and propose implementation approaches for device defense and public safety features.
  • Evaluate and author responses to sections of RFI/RFP offerings and Statement of Work descriptions for project partners and 3rd party vendors.
  • Determine system requirements, architecture, and design for project deliverables for both Nokia Internal Development Units and Technical liaison for 3rd party partners.
  • Lead Space and Defense User Device Technology Roadmap development and alignment with product roadmaps.
  • Establish and manage technical partner relationships with third parties required to fulfill project obligations.
  • Contribute to the creation of project work breakdown structure, schedule, and effort estimation.



Note: Only U.S. citizens are eligible for this role. Preference will be given to candidates who are eligible to obtain a secret level security clearance, given the nature of our customer. No sponsorship or relocation offered for this role.

You must have:



  • At least 10 years of technical architect industry experience with Devices Architecture experience (Architecture, Platform, SW Architecture, Performance, Simulation)
  • Expert knowledge of device architectural frameworks with practical working experience in applying device architecture principles to small or large integration projects
  • Working knowledge of specifications such as 3GPP 38.101, 38.21x
  • Bachelor's degree required in Electrical/Computer/Software Engineering or related
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written
  • Working knowledge SDR implementations such as SDR as a scanner or 3GPP UE
  • Customer and partner/vendor relationship management experience
  • The ability to handle multiple projects concurrently is a must



It would be nice if you also have:



  • Simulation and modeling experience using MATLAB or similar environment
  • Knowledge of Drone communication links, link budget calculations, electronic RF interference mitigation, Electronic Warfare counter measures for emerging threats, autonomous systems
  • Experience within consulting or professional services, or at leading industry public companies is preferred
  • Experience with Device low probability of intercept and low probability of detection capabilities
