The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) is an award-winning, independent global non-profit research organization dedicated to designing and implementing policies that address the impacts of the global transportation sector on climate change and public health. We provide high-quality, data-driven research to public officials, as well as to civil society and industry. Our mission-driven and diverse workplace values intelligence, flexibility, transparency, and good humor. Join our growing team of talented researchers, with offices in Washington, D.C., San Francisco, CA, Berlin, Germany, Beijing, China, New Delhi, India, and Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The ICCT is seeking a Model Development Intern based in either our San Francisco, CA, or Washington, DC, offices. This internship provides a unique opportunity to develop quantitative modeling tools that enable cutting-edge research with real-world impact. If you are an undergraduate student, recent college graduate, or graduate student with strong programming and data analysis skills who wants to address two of the world's most pressing environmental problems-air pollution and climate change-then this is a position you should consider. You will report to a Senior Model Developer in ICCT's Modeling Center.

You Will:

  • Develop and test Python code for ICCT's global transportation emissions model

  • Analyze and incorporate datasets relating to fleet/vehicle characteristics and energy/emissions performance into our models

  • Update and perform calibration routines to ensure accuracy of model outputs

  • Contribute to published model documentation

  • Learn about and contribute to research projects that quantify the potential impacts of transportation policies on pollutant emissions, energy consumption, air quality, health, or societal costs

You Have:

  • A strong academic record in data science, computer science, engineering, or related field in your current undergrad or graduate program

  • Interest in vehicle technology, climate change, air quality, energy, environment, public health, or related topics

  • Superior proficiency in data analysis with Python (pandas, scipy, numpy, matplotlib)

  • Strong command of common dataframe operations (e.g., group, merge, pivot, melt, filter, fill)

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel

  • Interpersonal and English communication skills, both written and verbal

  • Ability to work independently and engage effectively with team members

What Makes You Stand Out:

  • Experience authoring and documenting complex software (e.g., with multiple scripts, packages, interfaces)

  • Familiarity with environmental and energy challenges in the transportation sector

  • Experience working with software version control tools (e.g., Git, GitHub)

  • Familiarity with PyCharm or other Python IDEs (e.g., VS Code)

  • Proficiency in data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau)

Our Benefits

This is a full-time (30- 40 hours per week) internship opportunity that will be based in our Washington, D.C., or San Francisco office for 10-12 weeks and have an hourly rate starting at $23.17 (DC) or $25.49 (SF). Interns are eligible for a limited benefits package, which includes paid time off, internet subsidy, and other benefits. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Application

To apply, please send (1) a cover letter describing your interest, qualifications, and earliest available start date, (2) a resume, (3) the names and contact information of two professional or academic references, and (4) a Python code sample (single script or GitHub repository containing Python code) primarily authored by you that highlights your fluency in data analysis, code organization, and documentation (e.g., comments and docstrings). The code sample should be unique and reasonably complex, with multiple scripts or functions; please do not include boilerplate code from a course assignment. Incomplete applications will be given less priority. Applications will be accepted through February 16, 2025.

We are committed to equal employment opportunity regardless of race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, gender, gender identity or expression, or veteran status. We are proud to be an equal opportunity workplace.
