Engineer - Mechanical Design Whippany Actuation Systems is looking for a motivated Mechanical Design Engineer to grow their skills and career with one of our active Aerospace Business Unit Teams. These teams are the engines that drive Whippany's growth. You will be responsible for creating mechanical design solutions on cutting edge programs as well as supporting both our production and aftermarket requirements. In this role, you will typically:
- Work with the cross-functional integrated product team and customers to develop robust, thoughtful product solutions.
- Review project requirements thoroughly to understand design constraints. Leads or supports requirements management. Flows information to internal stakeholders when necessary.
- Create product designs to endure aerospace environments including high vibration, temperature variations, fluid and other contaminant exposure
- Strive to optimize designs, taking advantage of various additional software packages available for CAD modeling, stress analysis, tolerance stack-up, etc. while developing component/assembly models considering expected manufacturing processes and their respective effect on each design.
- Demonstrate understanding of various aerospace grade materials and associated properties, as well as various post-processes typically used on various materials in the aerospace industry for wear resistance, corrosion protection, surface/sub-surface material defect detection, insulation, etc.
- Design assemblies and components which include gears/splines, environmental or EMI sealing, load paths, fasteners, springs, electronics integration, packaging, etc.
- Develop stress analyses such as gear bending and fatigue, bearing life, Finite-Element Analysis (FEA), and other dynamic and static stress analyses using aerospace accepted/preferred techniques as needed.
- Communicate to a variety of internal and external customers, sharing information with the team, and articulating technical information for a variety of audiences
- Participate in new business development activities.
We require:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering from an accredited university or college
- 5 year's engineering experience working in aerospace, defense or an equivalent high technology manufacturing environment.
- Authorization to work in the US
Eligibility Requirements: This role is restricted to U.S. persons (i.e., U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and other protected individuals under the Immigration and Naturalization Act, 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)) due to access to export-controlled technology. Whippany Actuation Systems will require proof of status before employment. We would really like to see:
- Proficiency with PTC Creo, ANSYS, UTS Gear and/or KISSsoft and Mathcad
- Experience in gear design to AGMA specifications and prior experience working with ANSI 14.5 geometric tolerancing and dimensioning requirementsFamiliarity with military/aerospace grade materials, processes, specifications and electronic circuit card design
- Basic knowledge of load distribution on gears and bearings, as well as power screws.
- Knowledge of environmental testing in accordance with military and aerospace specifications.
- Knowledge of additive manufacturing
- A bias for action. Incorporates suggestions from others and focuses on developing the correct solution.
- Must be able to develop reports, presentations, conduct effective meetings and other formal means of communication.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to develop alternative approaches to solve complex problems.
- Strong adaptation of fundamental Engineering concepts, theories, and principles to real problems
- Knowledge of manufacturing equipment and processes as well as assembly techniques
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
- Must be a self-starter - able to work independently with minimal supervision
