Job Description:

PURPOSE

A Family Peer Support Specialist is a professional who provides support, guidance, and advocacy to families who have children or loved ones with mental health or substance abuse challenges. They use their personal experience as a family member of someone with similar challenges to connect with and empower families, helping them navigate the mental health system, access resources, and develop coping strategies. They provide emotional support, education, and help families build a network of support within their communities. Family Peer Support Specialists play a crucial role in promoting recovery and improving outcomes for individuals and families affected by mental health and substance abuse issues.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Working with children and families in crisis
  • Serves as role model for clients by sharing own recovery process and teaching effective coping techniques and self-help strategies.
  • Assists clients in development of recovery plan, including psychiatric advance directives and crisis plan
  • Provides education with a focus on illness management, peer support, and youth culture.
  • Provides advocacy services on behalf of client, enhancing relationships with community partners.
  • Implements and coordinates recovery plans for individual clients in assigned population group, including evaluation, consultation, and education, and follow-up services.
  • Provides case management, resourcing, service collaboration for individual clients as extension of case management services.
  • Serves as an active member of the client's treatment team, including participation in team meetings and treatment planning meetings.
  • Informs supervisor, and other members of treatment team as indicated, of issues/concerns related to individual clients.
  • Maintains accurate, thorough records on all assigned cases and uses documentation to assist clients in evaluating progress.
  • Participates in required trainings to maintain certification.

EDUCATION

  • High school diploma or General Equivalent Diploma (GED) certificate

EXPERIENCE

  • Has lived experience with an individual with mental health, substance abuse use, or co-occurring mental health and substance use disability

REQUIREMENTS

  • Eighteen (18) years of age or older
  • Attest to one year recovery as defined by Alcohol and Drug Treatment entity (AODE) regulations
  • Completion of Kentucky's Department for Behavioral Health, Developmental and Intellectual Disabilities (DBHDID) approved Kentucky Family Leadership Academy (KFLA) training
  • Completion of Kentucky's Department for Behavioral Health, Developmental and Intellectual Disabilities (DBHDID) approved Kentucky Family Peer Support Specialist (KFPSS) core competency training
  • Completes, maintains, and submits to DBHDID, documentation of a minimum of six (6) hours of related training or education each subsequent year

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Position requires lifting of 20 pounds maximum, with frequent lifting and/or carrying of items weighing up to ten pounds.
  • Normal work tasks may involve exposure to blood, bodily fluids, or tissue.
  • May involve 24-hour on-call responsibilities.

Within the bounds of their respective job descriptions, all staff are expected to exercise principle-centered leadership, focused on customer service responsiveness, with a continuous quality improvement orientation. Additionally, all staff are expected to develop a working knowledge of and follow all policies and procedures related to safety management and other Joint Commission standards.
