Who we are

As part of Nexus Water Group the Golden Heart Utilities, working with Utility Services of Alaska and College Utilities to bring safe and clean water and wastewater operations to Fairbanks. Together these three companies are known as Fairbanks Sewer and Water.

Overview

Golden Heart Utilities has an opportunity for a Temporary Compost Operator in Fairbanks, AK. The position of this class is responsible for performing all work associated with the day to day operations of the composting operation.

Work location and schedule

This position is based in Fairbanks, AK. This is a temporary laborer position with a duration of employment up to 6 months.

What You'll Do

Essential Job Functions

Assignments include, but are not limited to:

  • Prior to operating equipment, conduct routine safety inspection.
  • Operate loaders, dump trucks, backhoes and screen equipment.
  • Build compost piles with heavy equipment.
  • Communicate noticeable maintenance or repairs needed on heavy equipment.
  • Monitor gauges and other indicators to ensure safe operation.
  • Adhere to all safety rules, guidelines, and codes.
  • Assemble and disassemble aeration pipe.
  • Operate blowers.
  • Shovel compost.
  • Monitor and record temperatures and oxygen levels of compost piles.
  • Collect samples for laboratory analysis.
  • Purchase supplies and equipment as needed.

What You'll Bring

Experience

  • Experience operating loaders, dump trucks, backhoes and screen equipment.

Licenses

  • Possess and maintain a valid State of Alaska driver's license throughout the duration of employment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

These factors will be the basis for selecting the qualified candidates to be interviewed. Candidates selected for employment must satisfactorily demonstrate possession of these factors during a prescribed probationary period for continued employment.

  • Superior skill operating assigned equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Thorough understanding of practices involved in the use of various types of heavy equipment.
  • Thorough understanding of safety rules and ability to safely operate machinery.
  • Physical ability to operate heavy equipment for long shifts.
  • Physical ability to get in and out of heavy equipment.
  • Physical ability to use a shovel and move compost.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25lbs.

Working Environment

  • May visit construction sites, undeveloped areas and potential project locations on military installations in Alaska.
  • Walking and lifting
  • Works in industrial locations that are noisy, dusty, and have strong odors.
