Position Overview


Primary Purpose of the Position
The Therapeutic Recreation (TR) program provides curricular and co-curricular experiences for students to become leaders in therapeutic recreation and related professions. Graduates meet requirements to apply for certification by the National Council for Therapeutic Certification and licensure by the state of North Carolina. The TR program is situated within the School of Health Sciences at WSSU. The university is part of the University of North Carolina system.

The TR program seeks an innovative, creative individual to support WSSU's strategic plan, Unleash the Genius, the School of Health Science's mission, and departmental plans to increase student success in all phases of their education. This individual will contribute to the interprofessional education approach, the unique values of the TR program, and curricular development. Involvement in the profession as an advocate, both within and outside the university, is expected. It is anticipated that the individual will work collaboratively with colleagues and community stakeholders to foster success for the students.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to teaching excellence for students in the undergraduate Therapeutic Recreation degree program. The individual will be able to use various technologies and pedagogical techniques to engage students in the learning process. We seek individuals who continue to grow through professional development in the practice of TR and the scholarship of teaching and learning. Individuals must show an interest in connecting students to undergraduate research through mentoring and linking scholarship in the classes. Candidates will have the ability to participate in interdisciplinary approaches to teaching, scholarship, and community engagement.

Department Required Skills

  • Currently certified through the NCTRC as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist.
  • Currently licensed in North Carolina as a Licensed Recreational Therapist; or able to obtain licensure by the start of the position.
  • Relevant terminal degree, such as PhD, EdD or similar.
  • Minimum of two years practice as a CTRS.
  • Evidence of ability to engage in relevant scholarship.
  • Involvement in funding development such as grants, donations, project support.
  • Demonstration of interprofessional education or interprofessional practice experience
  • Able to work collaboratively with colleagues to achieve department and university goals.


Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • Experience in higher education.
  • Experience with technology and learning management systems.
  • Involvement in professional organizations.
  • Experience with outcomes assessment and accreditation.
  • Evidence of publications, presentations and other similar ways to disseminate data.
  • Potential to engage in active research programs with the commitment to mentor undergraduate students in research or scholarly activity.

Teaching and Advising

  • Teach undergraduate recreation and therapeutic recreation classes
  • Construct syllabi according to university, department, and accreditation guidelines
  • Facilitate learning opportunities for students that employ multimodal approaches
  • Use multiple resources (e.g., LMS, EAB Navigate) to engage on a regular basis with students
  • Seek internal and external professional development opportunities to continuously improve teaching and learning
  • Engage with students during office hours and other opportunities
  • Serve as an academic advisor and a mentor for students in the TR degree program
  • Participate in class evaluation process - both departmental and university
  • Incorporate interprofessional education and practice within the curriculum


Scholarship and Creative Activity

  • Develop a scholarship agenda that contributes to departmental, school, and university missions, goals, and plans
  • Engage in scholarly work which results in presentations, publications, and other similar ways to disseminate data
  • Support the continual improvement of the department, school, and university through surveys, evaluation projects, and other approaches
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, students, and community stakeholders to foster advocacy for the TR profession
  • Contribute to scholarly work that is focused on interdisciplinary approaches

Service Engagement

  • Participate in university, school, department and community meetings, events, and activities that support the TR profession as well as educational experience for the students
  • Serve on university, school, and department committees as requested
