Position Overview
The Associate Dean of Research (ADR) is responsible for the management and promotion of funded research initiatives and is responsible for stimulating new and continued research activity in the School of Engineering.

The ability to elevate the research activity in the school is critical to the Associate Dean of Research. This requires excellent leadership and communication skills. The successful candidate must be able to work with both individual and groups of faculty members to help them be successful in their research goals.

The ADR reports to and serves at the pleasure of the Dean of Engineering.

Administrative Appointment

The ADR will hold a 60%-time administrative appointment in the School of Engineering, with the remaining 40%appointment in the ADR's academic department. The percentage appointment may be negotiated.

This is a 9-month appointment with additional pay provided for completing tasks during the summer months.

Job Description
60% - Associate Dean primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Creating and implementing programs that support the school's goal of significantly increasing research expenditures
  • facilitating organizational and institutional support for major research initiatives and proposals
  • overseeing the school's research compliance,
  • overseeing responsible research conduct, ethics, and safety
  • approving proposal routing forms (PRFs) and other research funding requests
  • serving as the point of contact for conflict-of-interest management relating to research
  • overseeing the school's technology transfer, and industrial research relations
  • representing the school in the University's Council of Research Associate Deans, and the ASEE Research Council
  • overseeing major research centers, and supervising leadership of any school funded research facilities
  • Mentoring faculty on research opportunities.
  • Providing professional development opportunities to support faculty research efforts.
  • Supervising the school's proposal development team.
  • Seeking and evaluating strategic research partnerships with other schools and the college and research centers at KU and externally.
  • Leading efforts to recognize significant research accomplishments in the school.
  • Spearheading and coordinating faculty award nominations relating to research.
  • Improving the processes and support for researchers in the school.
  • Serving as the initial point of contact for research space related issues in the school
  • Oversee the School's research proposal matching fund account and serves as consultant to faculty in developing strategies for meeting matching fund requirements.
40% - Tenured faculty appointment with Teaching/Research/Service components

Required Qualifications
  1. Associate Professor or Professor of the School of Engineering faculty.
  2. Demonstrated success in research program development and leadership.
  3. Success as a PI on multiple research projects.
  4. Strong ability to community effectively and work with members of the academic and research community.
