Organizational Unit Overview
The Interprofessional Clinical Simulation Program ( ICSP) at the Brody School of Medicine ( BSOM) provides access to simulation-based education for learners across the Health Sciences Campus and ECU Health Medical Center. The program collaborates closely with ECU Health Medical Center in offering educational activities to Graduate Medical Education, EastCare, and other hospital staff. The mission of the Clinical Simulation Program is to promote excellence in clinical care, promote patient and learner safety, and improve multidisciplinary team performance using simulation modalities. The ICSP is a fully accredited program by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare.
A 20-room 7,500 sq. ft. Clinical Simulation Center is located adjacent to the hospital on the first floor of the Brody Health Sciences Building. A new 30,000 sq ft Simulation Center is under construction as part of the new Medical Education Building (opening Fall 2027). The ICSP also has a mobile Healthcare Simulation Unit, a 44-foot specialized vehicle that provides simulation education throughout the region.
Job Duties
The Brody School of Medicine Interprofessional Simulation Program is seeking a part-time Interprofessional Health Educator to provide interprofessional clinical, educational and technical expertise in the development, implementation and evaluation of simulation-based activities. Individual in this position will work approximately 24 hours/week. This will be a 12-Month, At Will position.

Duties of the position will include -

Simulation Curriculum Development (40%)
* Work with simulation educators to develop curriculum appropriate for interprofessional learners
* Identify gaps in the current medical student curriculum to which interprofessional components can be implemented.
* Implement interprofessional curricula and deliver content according to best practices from the health care, education, and performance sciences.
* Apply evidence-based principles from the science of training and performance to simulation program design and delivery.
* Work with the Associate Dean, Assistant Dean and Medical Director to create simulation education programs to meet curricular requirements for Brody School of Medicine
* Collaborate with leadership from the BSOM Simulation Center, the ECU Health system, and university to align simulation-based training programs with institutional priorities of providing world class education, training and health care.
* Collaborate with ECU Health educators to address quality issues using simulation-based education
* Develop a robust system to evaluate simulation program outcomes. Collect evaluation data on learning outcomes for simulation activities and collaborate with faculty to disseminate findings.
* Contribute to selected university and health system committees related to the development of curricula utilizing immersive methodologies.
* Collaborate with interprofessional and interdisciplinary faculty to develop simulation scenarios to promote student learning, critical thinking and clinical decision making.
Instruction and Outreach (40%)
* Teach and facilitate interdisciplinary simulation sessions as needed using standards of best practice in simulation
* Participate in simulation scenarios to provide an interprofessional experience according to teamwork principles.
o Model compassionate care
o Teach team-based roles and skills to medical students and residents, such as those in BLS and ACLS
o Teach medical students and residents how to correctly use medical equipment such as a defibrillator, airway adjuncts, and suturing
o Teach medical students appropriate diagnostic tests and labs to order in a variety of simulated settings
* Travel to regional locations to promote the mobile Healthcare Simulation Unit capabilities and programs
* Plan, develop curricula, and facilitate simulation sessions at the BSOM Simulation Center and regional programs associated with the mobile Healthcare Simulation Unit.
* Collaborate with ECU Health Science programs to create and teach interprofessional education simulation activities.
Professional Development (20%)
* Mentor staff in their professional development regarding curriculum design and delivery from an interprofessional perspective.
* Participate in selected university and health system committees related to interprofessional education.
* Work with the Associate Dean, Assistant Dean and Medical Director to collaborate with and mentor faculty and staff from across campus in designing and implementing simulation-based curricula.
* Assist with faculty development and training related to the use of simulation.
* Collaborate with faculty and staff from across campus to advance the science of simulation-based training and assessment and interprofessional education.
* Support and coordinate simulation-based research and scholarly activity.
* Promotes simulation best practices and initiatives established by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare ( SSH).

Minimum Education/Experience

  • Master's degree and one (1) year of clinical work experience and/or teaching experience in a critical care setting (such as emergency department, intensive care unit) ; or will accept in substitution a bachelor's degree plus at least three (3) years of clinical work experience and/or teaching experience in a critical care setting (such as emergency department, intensive care unit).


License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
None
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Adult Educational theory, methodologies, and delivery.
  • Knowledge of fundamentals of care across the lifespan (pediatric, adult, OB, geriatrics).
  • Experience teaching using simulation-based education.
  • Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator certification (CHSE) from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH).
  • Active BLS, ACLS, and PALs certifications.

  • BLS Instructor Certification.
  • Experience working in a critical care setting (such as emergency department, intensive care unit).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft software applications including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a track record of scholarly dissemination in presentation and publication form.
  • Exquisite interpersonal, collaborative, negotiation, team-building and communication skills.
