Job Description

Performs routine venipuncture procedures.

Job Responsibility




  • * Performs routine venipuncture procedures.

    • Assesses physical condition of the site for blood collection to be used.
    • Selects appropriate equipment for the chosen method of collection.
    • Calculates quantity needed for diagnostic study.
    • Labels specimen according to policy.
    • Delivers of all specimens to Central Processing Laboratory.
    • Performs hematology work-ups for the Coagulation Lab and Oncology Research.

  • * Prepares and tests specimens for examination and reports preliminary results to the supervisor.

    • Prepares specimens for analysis.
    • Fills in pertinent information on all required forms.
    • Keeps accurate record of patients and specimens collected.
    • Reports vital information to supervisor.

  • * Collects specimens.

    • Interprets physician's orders for specimen collection.
    • Formulates schedules for designated diagnostic studies.
    • Submits the schedules to appropriate staff.
    • Assists in reviewed lab result filing and chart preparation.

  • * Maintains the laboratory in a clean and orderly manner.

    • Ensures safe and clean environment.
    • Returns equipment and supplies to proper area.

  • Performs related duties, as required

Job Qualification




  • High School Diploma or equivalent, required.
  • Knowledge of Anatomy and physiology of the venipuncture sites; adult and pediatric phlebotomy and specimen collection techniques; communication with the patient donor; safety and infection control for both patient or donor and phlebotomist; methods of obtaining the proper type and amount of specimen for the test ordered or type of blood collection requested; transportation and preservation of specimens; facility policies and procedures; quality assurance and quality control; patient and donor confidentiality.
  • Fifty (50) supervised, successful adult and pediatric venipuctures and fifteen (15) supervised, successful adult and pediatric skin punctures, or a satisfactory combination thereof, shall have been documented.
