Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Athletics exists to provide educational and athletic opportunities to young men and women, to provide an environment for student-athletes to learn, advance and excel both academically and athletically, and to serve the interests of the University by complimenting and enhancing its diversity and quality of life. Through its athletic programs, the University seeks to unite alumni, faculty, administration and students in a common shared experience. The governing unit within the Department of Athletics is the Director's Office, which is the administrative office and clearinghouse for the entire Department of Athletics, and promotes the department's guiding principle of educating and inspiring through athletics. This unit provides support to administrators, coaches, staff members and student-athletes in order to provide and promote a premier intercollegiate athletic program for The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Department of Athletics is a highly visible public relations arm of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with statewide, national and international recognition.
Position Summary
The Assistant Athletic Director of Communications and Brand Strategy for Carolina Football will report to the Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Relations and Strategic Communications and work directly with the Head Coach and staff of the football program. Serves as the communications and media advisor to the head coach, coaching staff and student-athletes, providing input and guidance on all external-facing statements, social media presence, news releases, videos, and other communications. Will serve as the media spokesperson for Carolina Football. The position will manage the media requests to the head coach, staff and student-athletes, schedule and manage interviews and news conferences, build and manage relationships with local and national media, pitch stories, ensure that game notes and other deliverables appropriately promote the program and lead press box management on game days. It will oversee the Director of Creatives Services and Social Media for Football, the Director of Graphics Design for Football, and the Football Videographer, leading a team of creatives responsible for proactively and positively telling the story of Carolina Athletics through social media, video, graphics, web stories and traditional media. Works with Football Recruiting to ensure recruiting communications needs are met to bring outstanding football student-athletes to Carolina. Responsible for fulfilling creative requests as part of our NIL Services for Student-Athletes. Will manage budgeted Football Communications funds. Will lead Brand Management meetings with representatives from units including Marketing, Go Heels Productions, Creative Services, Ticketing and Tar Heel Sports Properties to proactively plan and engage communications about events with the goals of outstanding reach, revenue and recruiting.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Minimum of a bachelor's degree required (or foreign degree equivalent) with at least 1 year of experience in relevant independent instructional or educational activities; specific minimum experience is at the discretion of the Director of Athletics.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Bachelor's degree required with strong strategic writing and verbal communication skills. Experience planning and implementing marketing campaigns. Ability to maintain positive relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, fostering a collaborate environment that supports organizational goals and enhances overall productivity and communication. Knowledge and compliance with NCAA, ACC, and University rules.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
A Master's degree is preferred, along with 5 years of full-time experience in college athletics or professional sports marketing, communications, or sales. The candidate must possess a thorough understanding of and adherence to NCAA, ACC, and institutional rules relevant to this position.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Must be able to lift/move 25 lbs or greater. May be required to navigate stairs. Attention to detail and computer skills essential. Must be able to manage a high-volume, fast-paced environment.
