About the Department
As part of the Land Grant University, the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University is composed of over 40 faculty that direct a diverse portfolio of programs in teaching, research, and extension. Collectively, these strengths not only serve our clientele and our science but also provide a rich environment for graduate education and training that can be tailored to the specific career interests of the student, irrespective of whether they prefer training in the basic sciences or are preparing for a career in extension. Our education and research programs provide graduate and undergraduate students with unique hands-on learning opportunities using the latest technologies. Entomology and Plant Pathology houses the Plant Disease and Insect Clinic, the Larry Grand Mycological Herbarium, Micropropagation and Repository Unit, Structural Pest Management Training Facility, an Insect Museum with 1.9 million vouchered insects, and the Center for Integrated Fungal Research.
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences houses 12 Academic departments with 294 faculty, 2,891 undergraduate students and 899 graduate students. The College is home to 18 research stations strategically located across the state that enhances our interactions with our farmers, stakeholders, and industry partners. Essential Job Duties
The NC State Plant Disease and Insect Clinic ( PDIC) is a state diagnostic lab focusing on plant diseases and arthropod pests. The Research Associate's primary responsibility is diagnosing diseases of vegetables and other agricultural crops/other host plants using various methods for clients, and clearly communicating results with clients. This is primarily a service/extension role.

Duties included but are not limited to:

  • Identifying the plant and searching literature to find possible causes of diseases and other problems.
  • Using existing or researching diagnostic testing procedures and modifying or developing new protocols to improve performance and/or sensitivity and specificity as necessary.
  • Preparing written diagnostic reports and working with specialists to include management recommendations for the client.
  • Reporting results to the National Plant Diagnostic Network.
  • Recognizing when a diagnosis may result in possible regulatory action and communicating this information to the appropriate clinic staff and Director, as well as regulatory collaborators (NCDA&CS, USDA-APHIS).
  • Analyzing and summarizing diagnostic results to find trends in plant disease and the vegetable industry.
  • Giving outreach presentations to stakeholders, EMVGs, and/or guest lectures on plant disease diagnosis and identification in undergraduate and graduate courses.
  • Collaborating on research projects; if time allows, leading small research projects as desired and time allows (not a primary duty).
  • Other duties required for lab maintenance and operations.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Master's in Plant Pathology or closely related field or 5 or more years of experience identifying plant diseases in a diagnostic laboratory
Other Required Qualifications

  • Basic lab safety knowledge
  • Experience with computers and basic computer software (e.g. Microsoft Office, email, Google applications)

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD degree in Plant Pathology or closely related field
  • Experience diagnosing various diseases (especially fungi, bacteria and viruses) of plants
  • Experience with molecular methods for diagnosing plant problems
