Position Summary

The Assistant Production Manager reports directly to the Production Manager and supports the overall management of daily operations in the fabrication and machine shops within a job shop environment. The Assistant Production Manager ensures that all work is performed in accordance with company safety, quality, and schedule standards. They assist in managing shop personnel, including Production Controllers, Project Coordinators, Supervisors, Craftsmen, and Maintenance Technicians, helping them achieve their best performance to meet company goals. Additionally, the Assistant Production Manager may be involved in estimates, proposals, quotes, and other required reports or documents. Other duties will be assigned based on program needs.

Position Summary

Key responsibilities for the Assistant Production Manager include:



  • Assist in establishing processes necessary to meet product specifications and quality standards.
  • Support the management of fabrication and machine shop personnel, as directed by Production Manager.
  • Aid the Program Management team in determining the resources needed (personnel and equipment) to ensure efficient workflow.
  • Coordinate manufacturing schedules with Project Managers to optimize machine and personnel utilization.
  • Drive and support process improvements to enhance efficiency in both the machine shop and fabrication shop.
  • Assist with preparing and reviewing quotations.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve production and technical issues.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to secure cooperation and approval for actions and solutions.
  • Interpret production processes and job-related information for team members.
  • Allocate manpower and track shop productivity to ensure goals are met.
  • Assist in maintaining the shop area and overseeing the equipment maintenance program.
  • Support cost control efforts related to shop operations.
  • Adhere to safety regulations and policies to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Assist in managing the flow of documentation through the production process.
  • Identify and resolve issues in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, using independent judgment when necessary.
  • Have a basic understanding of U.S. Navy's Joint Fleet Maintenance Manual, NAVSEA Standard Items, and the SUBSAFE program.
  • Apply original thinking to develop effective methods, systems, or solutions.
  • Help maintain a positive work environment, supporting morale and growth opportunities for employees.
  • Mentor and guide shop personnel, helping them develop professionally through coaching and feedback.
  • Use office equipment, technical tools, and programs to support daily operations.
  • Ensure adherence to federal, state, local regulations and company policies.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE:

* Proven experience in supervising personnel in a manufacturing or production environment.

* Knowledge of fabrication and welding processes related to aluminum, carbon steel, stainless steel, and titanium.

* Ability to estimate jobs from blueprints and determine labor, material, and part costs.

* At least six years of experience managing people, resources, and projects related to mechanical and/or electrical systems.

* Strong proficiency in blueprint reading and interpretation.

* Experience in working in an ISO-9000 rated environment.

* Knowledge of successful LEAN improvement initiatives is a plus.

* Understanding of maintenance procedures for U.S. Naval vessels is preferred.

* Excellent verbal and written communication skills, along with strong interpersonal skills, are essential.

EDUCATION:

* Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering Degree (BSME); or High School diploma with formal training program after (vocational, business or technical schools) with ten years of experience in manufacturing, machinery operations.

* Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification preferred, but not required.
