Overview:

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Metals and Composite Processing Group in the Materials Science and Technology Division, Physical Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The candidate will contribute to the understanding of powder metallurgy and related art. A strong background in powder metallurgy, and materials characterization is required. Applicants will be expected to collaborate with research staff and industry partners focused on various aspects of process modeling, in-situ monitoring, and large-scale fabrication techniques. The primary research location would be at the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF) - ORNL's Hardin Valley campus.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Understand powder metallurgy and hot isostatic pressing techniques employed for various ferrous and non-ferrous alloys.
  • Metallography and characterization of powders as well as components manufactured via additive and conventional (PM-HIP) manufacturing techniques.
  • Collaborate within a multi-disciplinary research environment consisting of computational scientists, experimentalists, and engineers conducting basic and applied research in support of the Laboratory's missions.
  • Support senior staff in the development and execution of projects that provide valued and timely deliverables to various stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements per ORNL's Standards-Based Management System (SBMS).
  • Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of institution values and ethics.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering or a related field completed within the last 5 years.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background and expertise in physical metallurgy, powder metallurgy, and characterization of Fe-, Ni-, and Ti- based alloys.
  • Preferred hands-on experience and expertise in advanced characterization methods such as scanning electron microscopy with focused ion beam (SEM-FIB), transmission Kikuchi diffraction (TKD), scanning transmission election microscopy (STEM/TEM), electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), atom probe tomography (APT), X-ray diffraction (XRD).
  • Background knowledge of feedstock processing technologies including (but not limited to): powder atomization, Gas Atomization Reaction Synthesis (GARS), plasma rotating electrode process (PREP), hot isostatic pressing (HIP), friction stir welding (FSW), hot extrusion, and spark plasma sintering.
  • Excellent record of productive and creative research as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills as demonstrated by conference talks and posters.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

Special Requirements:

Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be for up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and the availability of funding.
