The University of North Carolina School of the Arts, located in Winston-Salem ("The City of the Arts"), was the rst state-supported, residential school of its kind in the nation. Established by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1963, UNCSA opened in Winston-Salem in 1965 and became part of the University of North Carolina system in 1972. More than 1,300 students from middle school through graduate school train for careers in the arts. The University of North Carolina School of the Arts is dedicated entirely to the professional training of talented students in the performing, visual, and moving image arts. The chancellor, deans, and faculty work with students in a residential setting to create an educational community that is intimate, demanding, and performance-centered. Learning is enriched by access to an academic program responsive to a conservatory curriculum. Founded to be both an educational institution and a resource enhancing the cultural life of the state of North Carolina and the Southeast, UNCSA offers numerous public performances, on- and off-campus, as well as community education in the arts.

Position Summary
The School of Filmmaking has launched a series of classes called Story Art Studio in which students learn a multitude of skills through the application of technical arts combined with narrative practices that can lead to unexpected results.

UNCSA is seeking TWO innovative, dynamic and creative educators who are passionate about collaboratively teaching visual storytelling to young artists eager to investigate the limitless opportunities mixed media and other storytelling forms can produce.

Ideal candidates will have experience in production design as well as other cinematic practices including, but not limited to virtual production, motion capture, visual effects, and post-production. Preferred additional skills include experience in practical effects, such as model-making and puppetry.

Applicants for these positions will be aware of the ever-changing landscapes of digital media and traditional narrative storytelling technologies.

Candidates should be familiar with festivals, production companies, and other organizations that can support the emerging artist's career and pathway. Faculty in the School of Filmmaking are expected to broaden the student's appreciation for both the art and commerce of cinematic storytelling by screening and referencing films, videos, and other forms of media across a broad cannon of work both historical and contemporary.
Description of Responsibilities and Duties

  • Teach undergraduate courses predominantly in the areas of visual storytelling, including visual and practical effects.
  • Act as academic advisor and mentor.
  • Evaluate students on a regular basis and participate in portfolio reviews at the end of the year.
  • Attend faculty meetings and any other meetings deemed necessary by the dean.
  • Assist in the admissions process by interviewing prospective students.
  • Participate on committees as needed.
  • Abide by and support all School of Filmmaking policies and procedures as outlined in the School of Filmmaking Student Handbook and Safety Handbook.
  • Ability to perform work on campus during the school year.
  • Other duties as assigned by the dean.

Required Qualifications
An earned doctorate/terminal in the teaching discipline or a related discipline, OR equivalent professional/experiential qualifications, ORequivalent combination of education and professional experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in production design as well as other cinematic practices including, but not limited to virtual production, motion capture, visual effects, and post-production. Preferred additional skills include prior teaching experience and experience in practical effects, such as model-making and puppetry.
Tenure Information UNCSA utilizes a multi-year contract system in lieu of tenure.
